Unbox is an open world game where you play as a, you guessed it, box. A self-delivering box nonetheless. You are part of a company called “GPS”. It is probably a word play on UPS.
You live in a world where companies like UPS have been replaced by GPS. GPS is a company that makes self-delivering boxes. These boxes (like yourself) need stamps to progress and help your company GPS. The target of the game is to complete challenges given by other boxes that are spread across the levels. When the challenge is completed you get a stamp and when you get a certain number of stamps you can fight a boss and go to the next level.
When you start up the game you are welcomed by nice “beach music”. The kind that you hear in Ariel the Little Mermaid. It is nice music that accompanies it perfectly.
So first you have the base level. Here you can choose between several other levels. When I first started playing it reminded me of “I am bread”. Although you don’t have the “push this button to grab this” mechanic. The game gives you a well-needed tutorial. Even though it is a pretty simple game, the game gives you some mechanics that you won’t think about like unboxing and slamming.
It is also a game where you have to collect a lot. You can collect stamps, but you can also collect golden tapes. There are even 200 in each level. The home world is a bit hard to find your way around. You can also free trapped boxes called zippies. For a kids game, it is surprisingly challenging. Some challenges are really easy but other ones can be a real pain. The thing that makes it hard are the enemies that surround you. You have these other bad boxes that attack you. They don’t take health away from you, instead, they push you away. But when you are standing on a cliff just to be pushed down by one of those boxes. Well, you guys get me. The game doesn’t have a health bar. Also, a box doesn’t control well. Although it is more stable than a sphere, that extra bit of length always manages to get me off the edge.
The game mostly is pretty direct and clear of where you have to go. But when you don’t go the way the game wants you to, it just respawns you. Sometimes you don’t understand what you should’ve been doing.
Another fun thing that got my attention was that in the blibberish the boxes spoke you could hear an accent. For instance, the orange box named dash sounded Scottish and the red one named bounce sounded French.
When I first played the game I was really disappointed there was no customization option. Although the game told me it could, I couldn’t find it anywhere. When playing the game a second time I found it. It would be a good thing to maybe include the customization in the beginning of the game.
A really nice part of the game is the multiplayer. I think this game really could have some good moments in it. You have about 2 game modes: delivery and arena. In arena, the goal is to push each other of the edges of the map. It is fun for young and old. Maybe with a twist for the older ones, if you know what I am saying.
The game really looks beautiful. It is made in the unreal engine. There are many vivid colors. It is probably an aspect of being a “kids game”. Nonetheless, I really enjoy playing it and it still is challenging.
| The Good | The bad |
| + long lasting | – Cutscenes can’t be skipped |

| + good multiplayer |
I personally really like the game. It is fun, it is pretty and the puns and references that are in it make you laugh. Personally, I really liked parcel peaks. I am not going to spoil anything but for me, it was a fun game to play. Because it is so simple and just fun to play. The single player is really fun and when you finished the game, you still have the multiplayer to enjoy with friends.
