Analysis: Skullgirls Encore’s Beowulf and wulfpatch update

The new Wulfpatch is out for Skullgirls Encore. A new character, new stages and even a new narrator there is a lot to see so let’s check it out.

The Wulfpatch adds 3 extra colors for every character giving them up to 25. Most of them are Kill La Kill references. I mean seriously like with the exception of Valentine, Big Band, Parasoul, Ms. Fortune and Eliza(but she technically already had a color inspired by the show) every extra palette has a Kill La Kill inspired color.

24-04-2015_03                           Here you see Fillia as Ryuko(Kill La Kill), Eliza as Raven(Teen Titans),                                                       Valentine as Hiryu(Strider) and Peacock as NONON (Kill La Kill)

A first for Skullgirls is the option to change narrator. In the options menu you can change the voice from default to Soviet. Soviet is as the name implies a heavy stereotype of a Soviet man and is voiced by creator Mike Z himself. it’s only the first voice so I can’t really say it’s my favorite, but it’ my favorite. Not only do you get this overly gruffy accent but you also get some hilarious lines. Let’s hope some more crazy voices come to the game, and let’s hope they’re all free. Even if they weren’t free I’d still get them. Though I recommend no character voices that’s kinda boring.

There are two new stages both are the same but one is a night version and the other is a crowded version.

The first is NMO Arena: A Wrestling ring with a lot of spectators, some of which hold up funny signs. On top of the stage are banners for all the playable characters which will be the characters you play as. And extra banners for the not so fortunate non-playable characters like Minette, Roxie and more(I really like Umbrella’s banner).

Here is the NMO Arena with Cerebella as Gamagori(Kill La Kill)
and Painwheel as Monster Ryuko(Kill La Kill)

The second stage is NMO Arena(Empty): It’s the same stage but the crowd is gone and it’s a lot darker. Everything that applies for the previous stage applies here except for the music.

MNO Arena (empty) with Beowulf as Jax(Mortal Kombat 3) doing Hulk Hogan’s famous “ear cup”                                              And Beowulf as Yamcha(Dragon Ball) doing CM Punk’s mic drop.

The new stages music is really good NMO Arena has a real wrestle hype sound to it but it doesn’t 100% fit in with the jazz inspired tunes of the game. But that’s where NMO Arena (empty) shines. It’ the same version of the other stage but it’s a remix that’s straight out a Jazz version of the theme.

Here are both versions of the stages themes

All in all this looks to be one of my favorite stages with exciting music cool little touches and custom banners make it that definitive “let’s settle it in the ring” stage to play on.

Now it’s time for the main  event, 287 pounds of folded steel, and sex appeal!

beowulf render

Beowulf is interesting in that he like he’s ripped straight from a wrestling game.

Once you grab an opponent Beowulf holds his opponent for some time allowing you to headbutt, knee-kick and choose from a variety of throws.

While Beowulf isn’t designed to do a lot of combo’s he really packs a punch with his grapple.

He also has the ability to do a fast dash-grab(kinda like El Fuerte but not that threatening) but it has quite a bit of start-up.

One way to get close is his Wulf-shoot which is just like Talbain’s Beast Cannon.

don’t trust getting close to your opponent using the dash because it’s slow however his forward dash treats him like he’s in air.

Another thing he has is his Hype Meter the meter allows you to do more stuff and is filled by either pressing and holding Light Punch, using Medium Punch a bunch of times or doing a special move that leaves you wide open but instantly rises the level up with one.

Then there is his chair that is used in his move set but can be thrown at the opponent.

Once that happens he gets new moves that replace his chair.

All the new moves are done with an arm of a monster named Grendel(get it Beowulf, Grendel) these moves are stronger but either take a while to use or leaves you wide open for attacks.

For instance his down Heavy Kick he sweeps just about the entire stage but even if it hits the opponent is going to get up faster than you are.

When Beowulf loses his chair he takes more damage and chip damage so it’s a real risk reward situation.

Beowulf is an homage to just about every wrestler real or fiction.

For instance his Light and Medium Punch are references to the Hulkster and CM Punk.

Or sometimes when he knocks someone down he whispers “you okay”.

Beowulf really brings the excitement to the matches with his talk and insider references.

Story Mode goes as follows:

Beowulf was once a national hero that beat the Gigan Grendel in a wrestle match.

Back then people where at war with the Gigans and Beowulf’s victory fuelled people up to go and fight the monsters just like their hero Beowulf.

Now years have passed and Beowulf is a forgotten relic from a simpler time.

However after years of doing nothing Beowulf decides to step back into the spotlight and make the people love him again just like old times.

But how will he do that? Well challenge the Skullgirl to a match and defeat her.

However it seems more is going on behind the scenes of the glamorous wrestling sport.

And so Beowulf is dragged into a battle he barely knows a thing about.

This is what make Beowulf such a fun character, he is on every time just being hyped up to fight doesn’t mater how weird the opponent might be. We Also get to see more of a “Rejected” character named Annie who is a popular kids show star and who Beowulf used to work with. It really feels like they’re pushing Annie for summerslam which is nice cause that’s a really cool character.

Overall The patch adds a lot of things and Beowulf is a really cool character.

He plays like a wrestling game characters and probably in grappler terms is one of the easiest characters.

He really is a charming character that brings the hype at any time he wants.

Now next in line is Robo-Fortune and after that I am really excited to see what the future of Skullgirls is going to be.
