Review: Sleep Awake

Sleep Awake is one of the first indie games that’s being developed by Blumhouse, a production house that’s known for the Insidious, Black Phone, and Paranormal Activity franchises. Sleep Awake is a game that presents an interesting concept between “staying awake” and “ going to sleep. It’s a game about what people would do to get a decent rest, but also the side effects if you can’t get that decent rest. Try to stay awake fort his review, and let’s dive into it.

Sleep Awake is an interesting story about Katja, who seems to know a lot mora bout sleep than most of the grown-ups around her. Katja will take you to a place where staying awake is another level of surviving. You go around in the city that’s called Crush, it’s a desolate place that seems to fall apart with each step you take. Not only does the city slowly crumble into the sea, but it literally is a city that doesn’t sleep. Going to sleep will often end in a scenario where this unexplainable phenomenon called The Hush takes you far away from the living and leaves a lifeless shade in return. Katja’s brother, for example, had to undergo his unfortunate event on his own. You might think that Katja still has some parents left… Unfortunately, we know nothing of Katja’s mother, but we do know that her father seems to be out of the picture due to this paranormal event called The Swell.

“Each individual has their own way of staying awake, but it’s not always sane…”

It’s up to Katja to find a way to eliminate The Hush by studying the scientific notes that her father has left her. For example, The Hush seems to be weak against specific waves of sound, and certain eye drops can keep a person awake without having the need to sleep, of course, not without repercussions… Katja’s trying her best to stay alive and create these eye drops to fight The Hush. There’s also Amma, who still lives in the city, Crush, and it is Katja’s responsibility to keep Amma safe from The Hush, therefore also making these eye drops for Amma and delivering them to her. Delivering the course isn’t that easy, because she has to cross Crush, and it’s a city where people are going crazy for just trying to stay awake… Each individual has their own way of staying awake, but it’s not always sane…

Sleep Awake is (almost like any other horror game) a story-driven walking simulator where you have to sneak around enemies and puzzle your way to safety. The game offers no dialogues, no RPG elements, no combat, … the game only has one goal, and that’s going from point A to point B while staying alive. How does the game keep you on your toes? Well, it feels like the developers wanted to make sure you would experience these different distortions in your mind due to the lack of sleep. It’s almost as if you’re seeing what a deprived person would see if he/ she is lacking hours of sleep. These psychedelic scenarios make you wonder what’s real and what’s a fantasy.

“Katja needs to talk to herself to keep herself from falling into the hands of The Hush.”

It’s one of Sleep Awake’s best selling point: facing distortion in reality. You’ll be confronted with hallucinations and even parts where Katja is struggling to stay alive as she will often be catapulted to The Fathom, a place between sleep and death. Katja even needs to ignore a militant group called the DTM, who are eliminating the people that are keeping themselves awake by performing sadistic self- torment. The journey throughout the Crush becomes harder and harder because sleep is trying to catch up, even with these special eye drops. Katja’s recollection of reality is being disrupted by loud sounds and flashes of horrific memories. Katja needs to talk to herself to keep herself from falling into the hands of The Hush.

The game isn’t going to be for everyone because if you’re starting a game with questions and you’re left with a lot more questions than you started, you might wonder if the game has succeeded in its goal as a game. I do believe that the game creates questions, but when you’re walking through The Crush, and you’re making time to explore a bit, the game will point you to scenarios, documents, or even cassettes to give you the answers you’re looking for. If you like exploring and taking in the information of your surroundings to get a grip on the story, this will definitely be the game for you…

“Sleep Awake succeeds as a bold and atmospheric psychological horror experience that uses sleep deprivation as both its core theme and its main gameplay driver.”

However, when you’re a gamer who likes to experience a straightforward horror game where the story is explained through cutscenes and completing levels, this might scare you off a bit. The game succeeded in creating a world that’s crumbling down and where the people, even Katja, lose their grip on reality due to the side effects of sleep deprivation. The game succeeds in creating that experience, but the lore that’s been scattered around the game doesn’t really fill in enough gaps to get a true grip on what’s happening. There is no visible line throughout the story, and it will definitely keep the player questioning about what he/ she just experienced.

Conclusion:

Sleep Awake succeeds as a bold and atmospheric psychological horror experience that uses sleep deprivation as both its core theme and its main gameplay driver. Blumhouse’s influence is clearly felt in the unsettling tone, strong concept, and focus on psychological tension rather than traditional horror mechanics. The game excels at immersing the player in a collapsing world where reality slowly fractures, effectively conveying the fear, confusion, and desperation of staying awake at all costs.

Where Sleep Awake truly shines is in its visual and mental distortions, hallucinations, and surreal sequences that blur the line between life, sleep, and death. The lack of combat, dialogue, and conventional systems reinforces its oppressive atmosphere, making survival feel fragile and constantly at risk. Exploring Crush and piecing together Katja’s story through environmental storytelling adds depth for players willing to engage with the world on its own terms.

That said, the game’s fragmented narrative and loosely connected lore mean it won’t appeal to everyone. Players looking for a clear, linear story with direct explanations may feel unsatisfied, as many questions remain unanswered even after thorough exploration. Ultimately, Sleep Awake is a compelling and unsettling journey that prioritises experience and mood over clarity, rewarding curious and patient players while intentionally leaving others disturbed, confused, and questioning what they just witnessed.
