Rainbow Skies is a new fantasy role-playing game from the makers of Rainbow Moon. Immerse yourself in a colorful and vibrant world filled with friends and foes, murky dungeons, turn-based battles, towns, shops, and everything else your role-playing heart desires. Time to (sky)dive in!
Rainbow Skies
Today is Damion’s final examination as a monster tamer, an important profession in his hometown constantly threatened by monster attacks. However, after a terrible hangover, he completely messes things up, failing the examination and destroying the monster compound. His best friend Layne tries to help fix things. Still, through a series of unfortunate events, they both end up crashing straight into the middle of amateur spellcaster Ashly’s magic, leaving the three bound together in an unbreakable spell. The trio sets off to find a way to break the magic and soon ends up on a much grander adventure.
Moon? Skies? Gameplay!
Rainbow Skies is a strategy RPG and the successor to Rainbow Moon. Although the latter has not been released on a Nintendo platform, the game is easy to learn and navigate. Unlike most titles, it offers a vibrant and wondrous world to explore, with hidden treasures and side quests that appeal to its appeal. The battles in Rainbow Skies are short and snappy; most can be completed within a few minutes. You’ll enter battles in one of two ways: running into monsters that are roaming around the world (and are usually blocking your path) or through optional random battles that pop up as you walk around. Once you’ve entered into a fight, you’ll be whisked away to a separate battle screen.
Battles are turn-based skirmishes that take place on an isometric grid. When it’s your turn, you can move from square to square to position yourself close enough to your enemies to batter them with an attack. In the game’s early stages, you won’t be able to do much, but as you get stronger, you’ll get more sub-turns, enabling you to perform more actions within your turn. You can also access new spells and abilities by buying books or progressing through the story. These skills can be used to hit multiple enemies at a distance or inflict nasty status effects on your foes. Playing with strategy is crucial, as foes can quickly overwhelm your party. Blocking enemies and experimenting with skills is enjoyable, especially when wiping out many enemies in a few moves.
It’s all about teamwork!
Improving your team in the game comes with various options, including gaining experience points in battles, using the crafting system and skill stones to upgrade your stats permanently, and leveling up spells and equipment through use. You start with three characters in battle, but you can raise your monsters to assist you. Invest in their development by adding skill stones, spells, and quality weapons and armor to make them valuable assets in your combat team. There are many different monsters to raise, so experiment to find the best fit for your play style.
One reason the game is accessible to both genre fans and newcomers is its balanced battle rank system. If you complete every side quest as soon as it comes along, you’ll eventually become over-leveled. However, playing at a higher battle rank maintains a healthy level of challenge. The game motivates you to play at a higher rank by increasing the amount of gold you can earn and unlocking new bonus areas of the map to explore. You can easily switch ranks to control how much you want to grind. You can lower your rank anytime if things get too harsh and you feel stuck.
Plenty of minigames, side quests, fishing, optional dungeons, and treasure hunting exist. You can purchase maps that give clues to buried treasure and dig up your reward when you think you’ve found it. And another neat feature is that the game has an excellent tracking system for all your progress. The menu tracks everything from fishing and equipment upgrades to side quest completion and exploration with a light on, making it a convenient addition for Trophy hunters. Sadly we don’t have achievements on the Nintendo Switch – but it has also been released on the major Sony platforms.
Conclusion
Rainbow Skies is an impressive adventure with a significantly improved storyline compared to its predecessor (based on the reception back in the day). Its captivating gameplay makes exploring every aspect of the world an absolute joy. With a vast selection of customization options and countless side quests, this sequel will keep you engaged for countless hours. Eastasiasoft, please also bring the prequel to the Nintendo Switch, okay?
