Hands-on: God of Rock – Gamescom 2022

God of Rock has to be the most unique and hardest game I got my hands on during Gamescom 2022. Are you ready for something entirely new? Let’s jump in!

Part Guitar Hero

God of Rock is a very unique game as it combines two genres that were never combined before. First things first, it’s a rhythm game similar to the Guitar Hero franchise. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see rows of buttons passing by. By timing your input correctly, you’ll power up your special moves. Besides the rhythm part, God of Rock is also a fighting game similar to the Tekken franchise, but more on later. The first thing you’ll need to learn is to push those buttons at the right time since this will help you a lot in combat too. Keep in mind however that clearing the rhythm section of the game isn’t its only goal and you can’t actually win it. At the start it’s all straightforward and easy, you’re pushing the buttons at the right time, gain some powers, and carry on. The more the music advances, the harder it becomes. Timing the rhythm is only a small portion of your attack and defense strategy. It forms the base of your initial attacks but you’ll need to do way more than just that. I loved this portion of the game since it really reminded me of the good old Guitar Hero games. For the streamers and content creators, rest assured, God of Rock isn’t using any licensed music so you’re free to share your crazy experience with your audience.

Part fighter

This brings us to the second part of the game, which is a fighting game. The characters got introduced in that classic fighting game introduction and every character has its own attacks and specials. The fighting goes rather deep as it uses the same kind of input to create combos like Street Fighter. Using your control stick our d-pad in combination with the buttons will launch your special attacks or will enable you to reflect your opponent’s attack. It all sounds pretty basic but when you combine it with the rhythm game it’s crazy. In order to become really good at this one, you’ll need to master both the fighting game and the rhythm game, which is a rather steep learning curve. I played it for a couple of minutes and needless to say, this was nowhere near the amount of time you’ll need to become really good at it. The developers did showcase the demo as it should and once you get the hang of it, this is a fun and challenging game for sure. It’s one of those games that I want to spend a couple of hours on so I can play it as I should.

Early Conclusion:

God of Rock is an incredibly unique game that dares to combine two completely different genres. The best thing about it is the fact that it actually works! It will take some time to get good at it but if you’re up for a challenge, you’ll certainly need to add this one to your list.
