Summary: Gearbox Software E3 2021 Showcase

Gearbox Software hosted its own special E3 2021 showcase. Wondering what they revealed? Time for a summary.

The showcase starts with a fun recap of the “history” of Gearbox from Borderlands, Godfall to Tribes of Midgard. The 80s instructional video worked like a charm for this.

First up we take a closer look at the filming process for the Borderlands movie directed by Eli Roth. Lots of blood and lots of violence and a bunch of guns will all be featured in the movie. The movie could potentially be a gateway drug for new Borderlands players. Having a seasoned director like Eli Roth and actors like Jack Black, Cate Blanchet, Kevin Hart and many more in the movie makes this (hopefully) more than a standard video game movie. It was announced that about 2/3rd of the movie is already done. Not much could be shown at the moment but it looks like the movie is getting the treatment it deserves.

Mayim Bialik – of Big Bang Theory fame – is here to tell about Borderlands Science in Borderlands 3. The arcade addition could be found in Sanctuary for quite some time. So why the special announcement during this showcase is beyond me.

Homeworld Remastered is up next. Homeworld was pretty much the first 3D RTS back in the days. Now Gearbox is helping it get the remaster it deserves for fans of the game and new players.

A Borderlands adapted to a fantasy world sounds awesome and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is just that. It takes Tiny Tina and everything that made the looter shooter Borderlands awesome and transforms it into a new world. Goblins, Wyverns, and many other mythical creatures will be features while still maintaining the Borderlands gameplay. It is mentioned this will be a stand-alone game instead of a Borderlands DLC.

Homeworld 3 is announced next. The RTS series finally gets a new game. The 3D world is again filled with epic battlefields to conquer.

Next up Tribes of Midgard is up. July 27th is mentioned as the release date for this game. This game is all about survival through crafting, battling, and defending your Viking village. Leveling up allows for new skills to become stronger to stop the giants. The game can be played alone but is also available to play with friends. Ragnarok can wait, Walhalla can wait…

Homeworld Mobile is next. The homeworld IP is being used extensively during this showcase.

Save the Fire realm in Godfall. Godfall will get a PS4 version which will be updated to a free PS5 version. Crossplay will be available so players can play with all their friends regardless of console. Fire and darkness is the first DLC announced for Godfall opening up the game even more. Regardless of the paid DLC, Free Lightbringer DLC will be added to the game.

At the end of the presentation, we get to see Kevin Hart who plays Roland in the Borderlands movie talking about his rendition of Roland “the soldier”. Again not much is revealed and Kevin Hart kind of takes it over in Kevin Hart style.

Conclusion

Gearbox didn’t surprise us during this showcase but instead showed all fans of the company been waiting for. The sneak peek on the movie set was an extra touch hyping the movie even more for fans of Borderlands. Not keeping Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands a secret until now is an odd choice because revealing it now could have added a bit more to the wow factor. Regardless, Gearbox presented a clear picture of where they’re heading and the road ahead looks good.
