While this may be the first new game to grace consoles in six years, it is clear from the start that if you played one Disgaea, you played them all. This is not a knock on the series, just a knock on the principle of why change a winning formula. I wish they had done more with this title, really do. Having played the previous games too recently, I have to admit that despite its fun story, that pooch alone makes it worth it, this game got boring quite fast for me.
I have played maybe too many strategic RPGs in the past few years and I was kind of hoping this game would bring more than the usual levels/netherworld and automated gameplay. I was disappointed in more than one way, especially because Disgaea is a decent franchise. The indulgence I suffered from playing all those SRPGs… It kind of did me in for D6.
While I should say that this is mostly due to my abundance of game hours in the genre in the past few years and that I can see the storyline being fun. I mean really, you beat the top guards at level 999 in the tutorial battle. A tutorial that you can skip if you have been playing other strategic/Disgaea games, but my recommendation is to either go for auto-battle or to do the tutorial.
In conclusion, Disgaea 6 is a very polished game, tons of dialogue, action, entertainment and everything you would expect of a Disgaea game, I think that is also its biggest weakness, it is “yet another one”….
