Welcome to our impressions of playing Gears Tactics on the Xbox Series X, we already did the review, so here we’ll discuss our impressions of the game running on Xbox Series X.
For our actual review, allow me to present the following link where my colleague Michiel did the thorough gameplay already and I have very little to add to his review, Gears Tactics is a great game and quite representative for its genre.
For starters, I would like to explain how this article came to be. With the release of the Xbox series X&S a lot of focus was put on the fast loading times and the higher quality graphics. But as this game is also a PC game originally, I wanted to see how well it performed with the controller in hand. Yes, I can hear you say it already, there is indeed also a controller mode available on PC, however, that is a choice, on the series X it is an obligation to play with the controller in my personal opinion.
Another thing I wanted to see is how did the graphical update fare and let us start with that. Many other reviewers have said it before and I will repeat the exact same words, the Series X is a beast when it comes to graphical prowess. Literally everything suddenly looks crisp and clear and Gears Tactics is no exception. From the cut screens to the actual fighting, not a single detail was overlooked and I would definitely call this one one of the prettiest tactical games I’ve seen so far.
Even smaller details like the menus and the tutorial just look better on the Series X but also my first impressions are that the series performs equally well. In all honesty, I do not have a high-end 4K TV yet, that has been ordered so do keep your eyes on the article in case I want to make additional comments. The LG CX will be my TV of choice because of the 120 Hertz and full HDMI 2.1 support. An expensive OLED TV but the Series X deserves no less and games like Gears Tactics will probably look even better in full 4K.
I have said it before in the past, I never thought that graphics would make the game but in a way Gears Tactics is proving me wrong. The game just basically shows more detail and while it does not help to beat the game, it sure improves upon the experiences had.
Now for the controller side of things, I have already declared my love for the newest Xbox controller, the added texture on the back just feels so lovely it feels a little bit more heavy, which I actually prefer. During my gameplay of Gears Tactics, not a single time did I feel that the controller was out of place for playing a game like this and controls were pretty self-explanatory move to the right position, take a position and fire at your command!
The way the game handled everything, it felt like no mouse or keyboard was necessary. At all times you could see what button to press for which action and some personal kudos to whoever designed the tutorial, that was one of the best parts of the game for me so far, yes I am only a few hours into the game but I am loving every bit of it, despite my previous dislike of the genre. But that is mostly due to how many tactical games came out recently.
While this article is not intended as a full-blown review of the Gears Tactics game, a game that in all honesty, I would not have tried if I had to pay for it, but thanks to Game Pass it was right there for downloading and playing and I haven’t regretted that decision yet. Ask me again in a few days to see if I have changed my mind about the game itself! As for now, I’m very impressed!
