Pumpkin Jack has been on my radar for a while, ever since I noticed the game in a Steam sale. Having missed out on the purchase that specific day, I have occasionally wondered if I should get the game anyway. Fast forward to today and me getting a review code for the brand new version out now on the Nintendo switch.

Pumpkin Jack is a very technical platformer but in a good way. Despite looking like a action platformer with some Musou elements, this game is a platformer that will make your toes curl. It is both challenging and will take you near the limits of being annoying but never crossing that border. It treats the genre perfectly and this game is like a love letter to older platform lovers out there.

Pumpkin Jack did not fully surprise me as I did read some very promising articles and reviews and I can confirm that this game is among the best I played this year in the genre. Whether you are solving a platforming puzzle to get to the next side or just try to survive the inbound mining carts, Pumpkin Jack has something for everyone.

And even despite my personal issues with the mining carts system, those parts of the game were never impossible to cross, regardless of the many lives I lost. Another nice addition is the abundance of safe points that also heal your health completely. Nearly making me forget the melee aspect of the game when enemies come at you, upgrading your weapons along the way.

Boss fights never really proved to be too difficult once you see the pattern in their attacks. Yes, it does sometimes pay to be a coward and run away while using your Crow companion to hit enemies from afar. This game is not just about randomly mashing the attack button, but the more refined you approach the attack, the more successful you will be in surviving a barrage of enemies.

I had more fun than I originally anticipated and that is a very good thing. But now addressing the elephant in the room, how does it compare to a Mario game? Simply put it does not, not because Mario is better, but because Pumpkin Jack is in a league of its own. If you like platformers, this is the one to try right now!

In conclusion, Pumpkin Jack’s hype is totally real, this game is a must-buy for all platforming fans. Quick restarts and plenty of save points make for a fun experience. Even if the game restarted too quickly because I was sipping my coffee…
