Review: Shinsekai Into the Depths

Welcome to our review of Shinsekai Into the Depths, a gorgeous but slow paced deep sea exploration game.Capcom presents a fresh and original undersea exploration game, filled with unique visual and audio experiences for you to discover.

The land has slowly but steadily been covered with ice, forcing mankind to take refuge in the ocean. Even the sea cannot protect them forever. The ice overtakes the undersea home of a lone aquanaut, forcing an unplanned journey of exploration and discovery. Take control and follow a mysterious mechanical creature ever deeper… Could there be others still living on so far beneath the surface?

Manage your oxygen reserves as you make your way through this magnificent underwater world teeming with life. Maintain your suit’s pressure resistance as you proceed deeper into the ruins of past civilizations. This hauntingly beautiful aquascape is truly the final frontier for this intrepid last aquanaut.

When I first heard the title, I instantly thought about my visits to Osaka, Shinsekai is a neighborhood in one of my favorite cities in the world. Some of my best friends live there and if it had not been for the entire Covid-19 pandemic, I would have been there end of May. Much like in real life, Shinsekai into the depths is about a natural disaster, ice has begun to take over the world.

Shinsekai starts off incredibly slow, which allows you to really get a feel of the deep sea. Slowly but surely allowing you to really learn how to maneuver your way in the depths of sea. Showing you that falling on your bottom can result in breaking your suit. Keep an eye on your oxygen and slowly but surely get your groove on.

Exploring every nook and cranny, Shinsekai is slowly creeping up on you and before you know it, you are so deep into this game, you forget to turn off your light at night and if it were not for lockdown, you would hate yourself for watching the sun get back up in the morning. Shinsekai has this magical pull on me and it keeps getting me back in every time, despite having tons of free time and amazing games I want to play, I keep going back to Shinsekai.

In my gameplay, I encountered hidden treasures, the ability to get more powerups for my suit, more oxygen tanks and the likes. Also got access to an amazing submarine, which I even used to get rid of some sharks. Yes, there are also predators in this game, from sharks to big eels to the more rare breeds that I do not even know by name.

What really grabs me by the hand, this game is so slow, yet you do not feel bored. Great gameplay and constant management of your materials and available air actually make it quite the game experience. You’d think an exploration game might be boring but not this one, Capcom did a great job to keep me captivated the entire time.

In conclusion, great graphics and a steady yet slow pace on top of the main attraction of exploration. Shinsekai is a game that I think will even have great replayability. Exploration has not been this fun in a very long time!
