Ghostbusters was a part of my youth and a staple of the movies I loved to watch. They were among the very first DVDs I ever bought, simply because I loved them very much. I actually upgraded them from my VHS tapes, I only did that with a handful of movies, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, … You get the gist of what movies I loved. Now fast forward to Christmas 2019, I got this game for my Nintendo Switch alongside several other titles. Witcher 3 and Layton were among the 5 games I got and well, I never expected much time to go into Ghostbusters at all. Witcher 3 was finished within 10 days and Layton within 3. So suddenly, I had ample free time to get my Ghostbusters on.
Straight from the start, Ghostbusters is an impressive game with a splendid AI. If you are aware of the title, you know all that Ghostbusters is about. Capture the ghosts first by taking out their health and then catch them in a trap. This game is no different, you are the newest recruit in the Ghostbusters company and Slimer along with some other ghosts managed to escape after a big blast covered the city.
In the initial tutorial, you get shown all the tricks to grab hold of a ghost and how to catch them in traps. Before you know it, you are on your way to your first mission which is to get Slimer back. Slimer, the good old green ghost that we all love to hate and hate to love. Most importantly, the AI of the ghosts and the fellow Ghostbusters is quite smart. Slimer is not just a dumb ghost that takes a few blasts and then you catch him.
Your fellow Ghostbusters too, they actually actively catch ghosts and are far from useless. They are part of the team and are incredibly reliable as partners. At one point, while fighting some ghouls, I was somewhat cornered and Venkman actually appeared to come to my help. He took out an enemy ghost and I was able to help trap another. The entire game is just well balanced.
You often get to be the victim too of what would be your “everyday” shenanigans from ghosts, like moving washing machines or them trying to trip you up. The atmosphere in this game is top notch and even the harder battles do not feel overly impossible. You just need to keep your head cool and go for the weakest one first!
Graphically, a game like this is a nostalgic high. While not overly impressive, it sure was very likable and quite bright. Even the parts that happen at night, still look great and if the backgrounds get too dark, there are always your tools to help you scan for ghosts in the dark. It all just clicks. It all just works.
And while Ghostbusters is not a AAA game, it does feel like a very well polished product to me. Sure, companies like Warner are behind this game, but rarely a movie2game product is as fun as this one. I really had fun and intend to complete this game in the next few weeks.
In conclusion, Ghostbusters is a fun game that stood out in the AI section as it actively helps you progress the storyline without being too easy. The game is so well balanced, I can only advise everyone to buy and try!
