Indie Corner: Biolab Wars

Welcome to our review of Biolab Wars, a throwback to the old days of heroic bloodshed movies and games.

Inspired by the 8-bit games and by the movies from the ’80s, your goal is to blow things up, defeat aliens and fight bizarre bosses in this platformer 2D with classical mechanics.
An alien lab experimenting on Earth? It’s time to call the mercenary team on duty to sweep the invaders by firing, beating, and bombing.

When I started playing Biolab Wars, I instantly had flashbacks. Flashbacks to the good old days of Contra and the likes. Everything about this Biolab Wars screams that same feeling, except being more accessible and a little easier. With tons of wacky power-ups and even bikes to get onto, Biolab Wars delivers the whole enchilada.

I felt like I was a fricking terminator while taking out the weird-ass aliens in this game. Giant bugs, worms, flying aliens, … I encountered ’em all. Even a giantly buffed baby driving a damn truck. The highs of nostalgia were all right there.

Biolab Wars also does things right and is a true ode to the genre. Literally every level was fun to play, not overly filled with enemies and very easy to get into. If not unaware of the fact this was a modern built game, you would really think it was a retro game and though everything has been said and done about the genre, Biolab Wars does breathe some new life into it.

Biolab Wars has 3 characters to pick from, several weapons and big frag grenades. They are limited in use and only the base weapon is really unlimited. So be sure not to waste too many bullets by firing in front of you if no enemies are there. You get to learn to be mindful of what to do with your ammo.

While there is not much more to say about this rather short game, just 7 levels with 3 midway points each and then the “epic boss fight”. The game is fun to play yet short in length. I doubt it will have high replayability and all, despite the amazing mechanics and sensation.

In conclusion, a short but powerful experience is to be expected in Biolab Wars. Nothing refreshing or so, but pure old fashioned shooting at enemies in a 2D setting. Fun to play!
