Review: Disney Tsum Tsum Festival

Welcome to our review of Disney Tsum Tsum Festival, a party game based upon the Disney Tsum Tsum franchise and it kind of rocks!

The ever-popular Disney’s Tsum Tsum makes its debut on the Nintendo Switch™!

The cute little characters from Disney’s Tsum Tsum step foot into a toy store, where they can have a blast playing ten different party games, including curling, hockey, and more! Enjoy many modes of play such as cooperative and versus play. Choose your favorite Tsum and have a good time with friends and family!

What’s more, you can go online to play with players from around the world! Including the classic puzzle game, Tsum Tsum offers worldwide online multiplayer support for the first time ever!

Full disclosure, I am not a fan of Disney, Tsum Tsum or party games. I loved this game though. I know it sounds crazy but I loved this game. I was able to get a physical copy early thanks to some real-life friends and I have been playing the game locally for a while, a video of some initial gameplay can be found on our YouTube channel or you can check it out here:

As you can clearly see, from the overly cutesy world hub, you get free choice from several mini-games and there are several options of what to do in most games. My favorite by far is the coin dozer machine, It is one of my vices and I admit to playing way too many hours on this free game on my iPhone over the years. The game on Switch uses the Joy-Con in a vertical movement as you can flip coins onto the dozer with the top buttons and move the Joy-Con itself to move the place where you throw those same coins. I had lots of fun and it is actually giving quite a bit of coin too, coins you will need to buy balloons in another part of the game to free up more Tsum Tsum.

The entire game basically has mini-games that take proper use of the controls. There is a shooting game where you basically aim and fire at the enemies to score points. Another game had me playing airhockey and another one had me playing a game of curling. The variety in games is quite interesting as it provided mostly fun games and aside from the overly cute graphics, you actually got a decent party game in your hands.

Also present is the classic Tsum Tsum game, the one also available on smartphones and it plays in tate mode while using the touchscreen. I did find it a little disappointing that I was unable to play the games in regular handheld mode on my own, but I can see how a party game should be played in a group and not solo.

What I also noticed, it is easy to gather coins, but it does take a while to really get enough to free up more Tsum Tsum. I had over 8000 coins within half an hour of the coin dozer. Which funnily had an option to limit how many coins you’d want to play on it. I guess the coin dozer is kind of like gambling and implementing a limit is the right thing to do?

In conclusion, Disney Tsum Tsum Festival is way better than I originally thought it’d be. My dislike for everything this game was representing was blown away and I was given a fun party game and it might be one of the best party games I played in a very long time!
