Blood Bowl is a series of sports Games made by a French development team called Cyanide Studio. However, sports games might not be the correct term here. The games feature characters that could originate from Warcraft. Not only the visuals are a bit far from the sport, but it’s also possible to just fight and kill your opponent’s team. Death Zone is the newest title and features a sport that resembles American football.
This all seems like the setup for a great type of game for players that do not really enjoy a bland sporting game. Except that it is not really a good game. The concept is great but the game feels slow and clunky to play. And the controls are not really optimized in my opinion.
Visually this game really screams nostalgia with its Warcraft-like characters but that also means that the models are far from HD or sharp. Don’t get me wrong the models show great attention for detail from the visual artists, but in the year 2019, I expect a bit more from them.
The game offers a great tutorial mode to get you into the game. This is a needed feature because the main game mode is 1vs 1 online matches. However, you can also play against AI in various levels of difficulty.
I enjoyed playing this game for a bit and you can really feel the passion that the developers put into it. The audio is really well done and visually it is good to have something like this next to the typical NFL games if you’re into American football. It just feels a bit like a game you would play in an arcade once and think it’s cool and maybe play a few more matches. After that, I would just go over to another game and not really feel the need to come back to this one.
