Welcome to our review of Skyscrappers, a Frantic Vertical Arcade Combat game.
With a brand new and exclusive Vertical “Tate” Mode for Nintendo Switch™, SkyScrappers is a 1-4 player arcade-style, competitive platform-fighting game. Select from a diverse range of extreme sportspeople, to fight and race your way to the top of a falling skyscraper… as it is being demolished. Play with up to four players in classic couch-multiplayer, take on the story-driven single-player campaigns, or set up a skirmish against AI bots.
Skyscrappers is so well presented, it will catch you by surprise what a disappointing game it really is. Allow me to fully explain why it disappointed me so much. I loved everything about the game except the gameplay really. I usually commence my reviews with the good stuff, so here goes.
Graphics, they are above average and the cutscenes/graphics are actually quite nice. It has this niche comic style and when you are in the gameplay, as simplistic as the graphics may be, there is this one feeling you will have that it just fits the game. The action might not be the best, but I could not imagine any better graphics for a game in this genre.
Music, while high paced and befitting of the game, it is not really something noteworthy, but it is one of the positive points to the game… It is kinda sad that I need to mention things like this to make good points for a game.
Vertical mode, which is probably the most fun of all, it supports TATE mode. Sadly the game is not fun enough to really make this worth the purchase, but it does make things a little better.
Now the gameplay itself, while boring, often feels unresponsive to me. You basically jump upwards through the level and in the meantime, try to fight off your enemy. If both of you reach the top, there is a sudden death and while simplistic, it does provide for a smart idea behind the game.
Now imagine not being able to really perform all the mechanics as you go upwards. You often are unable to really slash your sword. I felt the jumping was sometimes off and well if it does not play right, it adds more difficulty to properly enjoying a game.
Between games, the world map did remind me of the OG Street Fighter 2, which was a nice touch.
Now, while the idea is very promising and I did enjoy some games, the majority of them, however, were not that great. Losing battles without getting hit, a tough one to swallow at times, did add some more sourness to my overall feeling.
In conclusion, despite some fun moments, the most part of my time spent with Skyscrapers felt more like a bore than actual fun. At a somewhat higher pricepoint of 10, this game failed to provide me the enjoyment I expected after reading how the game was supposed to be.
I asked myself if I would buy it after playing it and at which price and I have to admit, I was unable to reply positively. I can not admit I would buy this game if given the option. Just so many things are wrong and my humble suggestion is to really consider whether or not to buy this game, I disliked it.
