Reverie is an action adventure game set on a fictional island in New Zealand, inspired by the legend of Maui and the Giant Fish where the demigod himself fishes up the North Island with a powerful fishhook.

Reverie is developed by Rainbite Limited. Localized and published in Asia & Japan by Eastasiasoft Limited. We recently had an interview with them on our site, an interview worth reading!

Reverie is out on PS4 and Vita and it is just such a blast to play. I found hints of Earthbound, Zelda, Pokemon and many more in the game, all perfectly mixed together in a great adventure. For my review, I will talk about my first half hour in detail.

At first, you arrive at the island, you learn the basics of how to move around and that the rolling mechanic is the best way to move around quickly. You enter the island and are greeted by your grandfather. He tells you to go to their house and how to use the world map.

Once you make it home, there is an earthquake and before you know it, you are on your first adventure. First, you go get the lamp in the shop, then you go down the basement. The Basement is filled with smaller enemies and in true Zelda style, you are basically facing dungeons. Solve the mysteries, find the map and proceed to the boss battle.

In this case, a giant washing machine. Much like any games,  final bosses come with their own specific attack patterns and ways to battle them. Once done, you get to explore the wide world, the island in this case. The map will say what way to go and we continue from there on.

While you explore, you run into animals that attack you and before you know it, you are solving even more puzzles like the one where you go get yourself a yoyo. A new weapon to stun enemies so it is easier to hit them with your cricket bat. Using the yoyo to trigger a trap or open a port, … This game brings a great set of familiar features to the table.

Graphic wise, this game can be best described as very similar to Earthbound and Pokemon, which is perfectly fine. It just makes me want to play it everywhere possible. This game has a very classic feel to it and while the controls could see a slight improvement, I mean specifically how the cricket bat is handled, it could be more precise, but that is nitpicking…

Reverie is a great game, a great story to boot and I think I may end up buying the physical version right after finishing this review. I love it that much.

In conclusion, Reverie is awesome. Reverie is the game you never knew you were missing and my rating is 90%.
