Welcome to our review of Toki Tori for Nintendo Switch, a classic puzzle game now out on Nintendo Switch.
Take control of Toki Tori, a surprisingly heroic chicken, as he puzzles his way through 80+ levels spread over 5 unique worlds.
Toki Tori isn’t very athletic, he can’t even jump! Luckily he has some great tools at his disposal, including the Telewarp, Freeze-o-Matic, and InstantRock. Creative thinking and problem-solving are required to collect all eggs in each level, but don’t worry! When you get stuck, you can always rewind the time. And if all else fails, use the Wildcard to skip a level.
I originally bought this game back on Wii U, long before joining GamingBoulevard and I have to say, at that time, I wanted the game really to be portable. I heckled the Wii U gamepad for this game, because my desire for true portability was not something I was able to get at the time. I ended up not buying the game on 3DS because, at that time, I was too consumed by the Wii U.
Fast forward to current day, the Switch delivers nearly everything I had ever hoped to be present in the Wi U and suddenly, Toki Tori was announced for Nintendo Switch. So when we were graced with a review code by the developers, I really wanted to give this game a try! Having loved it before, I was in front of a real challenge! Did the game age properly or was it a bad sense of nostalgia?

First, let us talk about the actual game. Toki Tori is a puzzle game that bends the laws of physics in the funniest way possible, you are a chicken that can not fly. You need to collect eggs by means of solving puzzles over the small levels you are given. Ranging from freezing enemies, dropping ghosts through the floors, building bridges, … You have several game mechanics at your disposal and it all comes down to finding the right path to solve the puzzle at hand.
With the limit of not being able to fly, you obviously can not jump or fly over ledges, forcing your hand to find alternatives. One of them is the building of bridges, but even that is limited to a certain amount. It is each time mentioned in the bottom of the screen. The puzzles obviously get a lot more complicated as you progress, but the build-up, that is something I always felt like it was done so properly, it almost sets an example.

Comparing it to the original, I honestly think it stood the test of time. I actually played it during my lunch break at work. That specifically, that was the reason why I hated it on Wii U, I was unable to take it on the go. I was about halfway through the game within the first day of playing it. I am very used to puzzle games as it is by far my favorite genre. I actually named a puzzle game my Game of the Year before, I love the genre that much and I must say, for being an “old” puzzle game, this is one that is a must buy!

In conclusion, Toki Tori is just a must own for lovers of puzzle games or anyone else searching for a challenge. It is a more basic puzzler without some of the intense action that you’d find in a game like Death Squared, but Toki Tori is awesome in its own universe.
My rating for this game is 80%
