Indie Corner: The Bunker for Nintendo Switch

The Bunker is not your typical game for Nintendo, not even your typical game overall. It’s a survival horror game completely made in live action. So, it’s like watching a movie where you get to take all the decisions for the main character John (played by Adam Brown). The game is set in a post-nuclear apocalypse in Great Britain. Years ago, England and possibly a lot more of the world was attacked by several nuclear bombs that devastated the land and made it to toxic to be inhabited. Some people managed to get into Bunkers which were built only weeks before the attack.

You see that John was actually born in this bunker. To the frustration of the people leading it. Because of course food is scarce and it is not possible to sustain even more people than what was planned. You gradually through flashbacks learn more about what happened in the bunker. Because when you get to play, John is all grown up and completely alone in this place. You have to go through his daily routine of checking his health for toxicity levels, eating, checking the bunkers systems to be functional and a few other activities.

Of course, a few days into the game things start to fail and you have to push John to do things he is not used to nor comfortable to do. The game is actually a combination of cutscenes after each you decide where John goes or what he does, and this affects what happens in the bunker.

The actors in this movie/game did a tremendous job of giving a stellar convincing performance. The story takes a few twists and has a great ending. Though the game isn’t too long it really is immersive. It’s a completely different experience than you would expect from any game, but this is a good thing.

The Switch runs this game effortlessly and it’s fun to just lay back on the couch with you switch console (you don’t even really need to joy cons) and watch this adventure unfold. You make the decisions by using the touchscreen interface of your switch console. There are a few (I believe 3) different mechanics but it’s mostly just clicking.

If you’re into horror games or movies and would like a fun laid back experience, then this might be the game for you. It takes about 2 hours to complete but since you have some alternate decisions that could be taken, it urged me to replay the game and take a different path. It is labeled a horror game and it kind of is but it isn’t too scary, let’s say it’s a mild horror game which makes it so laid back. The game itself has been out since September 2016 on other platforms such as; PS4, Xbox one, PC and Mac OS. But even so, I’ve tried to avoid spoiling anything.
