Indie Corner: Guilt Battle Arena

Welcome to our review of a new co-op game for Nintendo Switch called Guilt Battle Arena!

As a member of The GUILT Patrol, you must battle the Dreadful Judge and his evil minions to bring peace back to the galaxy.

In this frantic 2D couch combat game, you have one bullet to fire at your opponents. After firing your gun, you must “rebound” your bullet before firing again. This grin-inducing mechanic introduces a new strategic element where thinking about where your bullet will land is as important as where you shoot!

1-2 player Co-op or 2-4 player Versus mode. This is a game that begs to be played together with friends and family. Enjoy the playful style with 7 game modes and 6 stackable gameplay modifiers. Want to try out jetpacks and then turn everyone invisible? Go for it!

Select from 10 Player costumes to start with an additional 35+ wacky costumes to unlock during your quest to protect the galaxy!

The longer you play this game, the more obvious it becomes this game is fun with friends and can get tiresome alone. Despite being loads of fun, this game is quite challenging to really get into, but once you do, it becomes clear that there is a preset way to play this game.

When or if you pick up the game, try approaching all the enemies from every possible side. You will notice you cannot be touched by some and that some are more lethal than others. When you figure out the right way, you will spot patterns on how to weave through and really succeed. My own personal favorite is to avoid jumping. Enemies from the top cannot kill you if you do not jump, right?

Some enemies do shoot right at you, so you need to jump at times after all. I can tell you this, aside from straight shots, you have levels where you get a homing missile on you. So now you are forced to jump to stay alive. Not forgetting to keep your sole bullet at hand. As you progress, the game speeds up and you get hit with more and more enemies, each time adding to the ever-growing challenge.

Another cool thing you get to learn at one point, dash forward right after firing your bullet, allowing you to do a near continuous attack. But there are limits to this style of attacking. Both at the left and right of the screen, there is a virtual wall, where your bullet won’t go. But sadly, you can still die! So do be careful when using this attack style!

Once you get killed, you also get a nice replay of what you did wrong, allowing you to take pointers on how to get better.

Before I give it a rating, I want to make a comment about the one thing that I really disliked! When you get hit, you get almost no time to get to a safe place. On the contrary, you can easily get hit a second or even third time. It is something I found really annoying. There was one instance where I went from 3 hearts to death in 1 second… I get that you want to make a game more difficult, but it should at least be a little fair?

In conclusion, this game is fun but I can not see it being a game known for its longevity. You can get a serious kick out of this game, but it can be cruel. Set at a perfect price point of 10, this game is something to consider for the occasional short play session.

My rating is 60%
