Indie Corner: Astro Bears Party

Welcome to our review of Astro Bears Party! A crazy game on Nintendo Switch!

This has been very busy few days, tons of new Nintendo Switch releases, plenty more on the way ahead and who said Switch did not have any games?

Today we review a game that looked incredibly childish and not interesting at all, costing a mere 5 Euro on the eShop, this is Astro Bears Party. I first checked out the video on the eShop and this game looked childish, but heed my warning, do not mistake this for a childish game, it’s so only in appearance by making this game all about cute and cuddly space bears.

The premise of this game, basically the original Snake, the one we all once had on the original Nokia phone. Switch the flat playing field of Snake for a see-through globe and that is basically how this game goes. The red dot of Snake is replaced with a jetfish.

As you run around, the ribbon you leave behind is something you can not touch, thankfully, you can jump over it by using the jet fuel option. There is also a very useful dash function which comes in handy to get the jetfish. As you can guess, the jet fuel is limited and automatically refills when the Astro bear is running. Use your wits to jump, dash and evade the ribbon to get highscores.

By choosing from 4 Astro Bears, each with their own advantages, you will quickly get the basic gist of what this game is about, but actually honing your skills, that is another thing. The further you get down the game, the longer the ribbon becomes and more fun it becomes trying to avoid everything while still nabbing that jetfish. This game surprised me a lot, it was way more fun than I originally anticipated!

For the initial price of 5 Euro, you also get a party mode and this is where the real fun begins!

Imagine that same playing mechanic as the single player, but then against each other. Up to 4 players can play this game against each other! Dash in front of each other, ruin an escape through a jump ribbon, … This game is all about purposely ruining your opponents tactics! This game can be very sadistic towards your fellow players and this is what makes it so much fun!

In conclusion, for 5 bucks, you can not go wrong! This game recreated the original Snake game into a 3D version and boy, is it fun! I think it is a great party game and that is the biggest appeal to get this game! The single player will make you a better player, but I have my honest doubts in regards to longevity. The game sometimes feels like it belongs on a collection of mini games rather than be its own entry on the Nintendo eShop.

I would very much recommend everyone with a spare 5 Euro to try out this game! The cheap price compared to the longevity of the game, it ended up being a hard choice for the score, but I ended up with 80%!
