Review: Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii U)

Today we review the original Rayman Raving Rabbids that got a second lease on life on the Wii U Virtual console. Read our review to find out if it aged like a fine wine or not!

We all know the Raving Rabbids, the Ubisoft creation that rocked the Wii era with their amazing games filled with tons of mini games, this review specifically is all about the original game! This game was one of my favorite games back on the Wii, it probably made my muscles sour more than once in the past.

Fast forward to today, the age of the Nintendo Switch, where the Wii U still got a new virtual console game. While Rayman Raving Rabbids is one of the biggest pillars that made the Wii big, did it really hold itself strong against what we have on the market today? I think it does.

We start this game with Rayman having a nice little get together with his friends, having snacks and before we know it, the friends disappear into the ground and the Rabbids appear and before Rayman figures out what is happening, there is a big enemy grabbing him and taking him to the arena.

In the arena is where the actual game begins… Rayman can enter many exits, each leading to a mini game, testing your prowess in this crazy game. I will not be covering all the mini games, as that would end up becoming boring, so I will just hand pick a few that stood out for me.

Let us start by tossing a cow more than 60 meters by shaking your wii mote like a lasso.

That was by far the craziest first impression you can get from a game, haha, but that is among the initial first games of this game, together with running as Rayman with a bomb, with the intention to give it back to a Rabbid, in order to make the rabbid explode instead of yourself… Pretty crazy right?

Another one, using the wii mote to draw over food so the rabbid can eat, which is a really hard one, as you want to go fast, to score points, but often you end up messing up!

In short, this game did age well, I would not mind an upgraded one, but in a way, with the Mario+Rabbids Kingdom battle on the way, I think they would need to really make a new game instead of just upgrade this one.

In conclusion, this is a great party game, which can easily compete with the Mario Party games, both in craziness or intensity. While it did stand the test of time, I am not sure about having it out on Wii U during the most intense period that its’ successor the Switch is having.

The game itself is definitely worth buying if you do not own it already and can be found on the Wii U eShop.
