Review: Kirby’s Blowout Blast

Welcome to our review of the Nintendo eShop exclusive called Kirby’s Blowout Blast!

At the very cheap price of 6,99, Nintendo released this cool game called Kirby’s Blowout Blast, a very fast paced Action 3D game that gives you exactly 5 minutes to blaze through a level in order to finish it!

We all know how Kirby games work, suck up an enemy or an obstacle and blow it away, jump over the ledges and eat food to replenish your health bar. This is also the premise in this new installment in the Kirby IP. Sucking up enemies to defeat enemies, preferably scoring combos to ensure higher scores, like many other games, it is all about scoring that gold medal in the end.

Spread over 5 levels, you go from real easy sub levels to eventually a much more challenging final level. I finished the main storyline in under an hour, because I went straight for the finish in every level. And obviously, straight for the main boss. I would not call the game too easy, you do get that harder EX-level after beating at the normal difficulty level. So it can keep you occupied for quite a bit.

Despite being a smaller game, it also supports amiibo, I must admit being surprised when I saw that amiibo logo when I opened up the game! It supports the Kirby amiibo, which I actually own, so I tried to scan them, each giving you a new statue in the main plaza, which is the place where you start off and just jump onto a star to head into a level. While they do not appear to unlock anything special, it does bring a nice touch to the game, making the plaza more feel like a real plaza instead of the bare plaza you start off with.

While this is a short game for the initial set of levels, it is quite fun and time did pass by really quickly, I had to verify my activity logger to see how long I had actually played, being very amused to see 56 minutes there. I will share one little bonus, after completion, you get 1 extra star, but I will not be spoiling what it stands for, you need to finish the game for yourself!

In conclusion, while being very fun and somewhat challenging as you progress, the game itself is short and will not satisfy you if you expect a full blown Kirby game. But let us be honest, at the price you are paying, you get a very decent game with a great bang for the buck!

For the rating itself, I am stuck between rating it with the length in mind or rate it without the length in mind, so I decided to include both my ideas on this, without the length of the game in mind, I think I would actually give it a 90% rating, this game is fun and as you progress, it does get more challenging. At the same time, it is a very short game, with that in mind, I think I would need to consider the price and compare it to similarly priced games. All this leads me to a 75% rating with the length in mind.

I would recommend shelling out the cash on this title, however, despite being short, you will enjoy the time you spend playing this short gem.
