A game combining 2 all-time great puzzle games into a match made in heaven!
We all know the great Tetris game, it entered our lives during the original Game Boy era and I personally remember spending way too many hours on this game during my childhood. We also know the Puyo game, whether you played it on a Sega console or on the GameCube or one of the many other platforms that had this great game…

Today, we get a chance to play the combined efforts of these games, whether it is the story mode, endless marathon mode from either separate game or the combination of both, if you like puzzle games, you are in for a treat!
I actually originally imported this game for my PlayStation vita, about a year and a half ago, straight from Japan, because at the time, it did not seem like we would get a localized version of the game. Skip to current day and both the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4 got the game.

When I first started playing the game again, I started out with the story mode, which is the real way to start off this game, it will slowly but surely teach you the hang of how to play this game, without rushing things! The first few stages will feel easy and much like a tutorial, but trust me, you will know later in the game why this slower learning curve matters. Things in the later levels will get hectic.
At first, you are mostly encountering the basic Puyo or Tetris levels, not the ones where you “switch” playing styles throughout the level, those are what makes this game both annoying and awesome at the same time! Imagine the big Tetris board coming down for the good ol’ 4-in-a-row clearing and then it switches to the Puyo game system and it completely ruins your vibe, yeah, you will come to hate and love that at the same time…

Aside from all that smart handling of both playing styles, this game is also an excellent multi-player game, face off against your friends and this is where the Switch version comes in handy, this game lends itself to mobile play and it needs to be said, this is one of those titles that you buy on the eShop instead of buying the physical version. I feel this game should be a must on your console itself for the quick game or the quick challenging of a friend on the go!
What I did notice, the game awards you credits in order to buy other skins for the Puyo or Tetris forms, adding alternative voices for the game characters, … This felt like a forced bonus to me and aside from a basic new color to the blocks, it did little to nothing to contribute to the game in my humble opinion. I guess a lot of our readers might disagree with me on this one, I just did not enjoy the bonus this was supposed to be.

In conclusion, this game should be in every puzzle-game loving gamer’s collection, whether you are a casual player or a very hardcore one, this game should be in your collection. It can bring a perfect distraction for a short while or for a longer period. On Switch, It came out the same day as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and it has kept me from playing Mario Kart the entire time. Playing the marathon Tetris reminded me of my childhood and the endless hours of playing this decades ago. The combo play of both styles is highly addictive and entertaining!
As this is clearly a game that the mainstream gamer might miss out on, I would recommend at least downloading the demos and seeing for yourself if you will enjoy this game as much as I did. My rating is 85%!
