Dormammu is grinning as he is standing above the beaten-up body of Doctor Strange. “I guess your bargaining skills were a little underwhelming”, he spits out. Are you sure you want to keep doing this, little human? I’ll knock your teeth all across this astral plane!
If you don’t recognize the scene described above, that’s because it was not part of the 2016 Doctor Strange film. It’s not even a deleted scene, nor is it an alternate ending. Instead, it’s a ‘scene’ from this reviewer’s playthrough of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PC Port). With my hands on the keyboard, Dormammu isn’t a gigantic being locked in time with good ol’ Stephen Strange. Instead, he is kicking everyone’s butt! Muhahahaha! Victory shall be mine!
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is not a new game, but the Pc port of a game that was first released for the Playstation 3 back in 2012. Yes, this game is 5 years old. How dare they release this only now? And what were they thinking when they priced this for +/- 25 euros? Well, they were probably thinking about cash animals of the ‘moo’ variant. And dollar signs. And things like that. Is this game worth buying for this price? Well, in short, yes and no.
First of all, the PC port of this game contains all of the DLC that was released, and includes a gallery mode that contains all of the concept art of both Marvel and Capcom. Additionally, the game has an improved 1080p resolution, runs at 60 frames per second, and even supports 4k. Yay?
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is what you expect from a game that is all about mindless mayhem: heroes and villains of the Marvel universe beat the living cr*p out of heroes and villains from the Capcom universe, or vice versa. There’s nothing else to it. Ryu, Dante, and Chris fighting Deadpool, Wolverine, and Rocket Raccoon at the same time, in a revolutionary 3-tag team (well, it’s basically a tag team with an extra character, get over it game). Mindless button bashing or intricate combo moves? Your choice! Both work perfectly fine!
UMvC3 is not the type of game that can be compared to Mortal Kombat or Tekken. It’s less detailed, less extensive, less story-driven (there is no story whatsoever), less ‘next-gen’. This is the type of game that you pick up just to have something to play when you are bored. Choose your characters, choose your game mode, fight offline or online. There’s nothing more to it.
But! For a real Capcom or Marvel fan this could be way more, obviously! It is the perfect opportunity to finally settle the age-old discussion that circulates among like-minded friends: who would win? Iron Man or Zero? The game sure has potential to be a lot of fun, but only if you are interested in the Capcom or Marvel universe.
In short, this game is perfect for fans of both the Marvel and Capcom universe, and perhaps a bit less fun for gamers who prefer to have a good fighting game. Although the PC port has received some visual upgrades, in its core, UMvC 3 is still a ‘last-gen’ title. It’s fun, but there are better games available at the moment.
