Indie Corner: Kamiko

Kamiko brings an old battle style to a modern console!

Kamiko brings us a great mix of retro graphics that are gorgeous on its own and a cool classic action style game. The main premise of the game is to solve puzzles and rack up combos while fighting enemies.

Sounds easy, right?

Wrong! This game is quite hectic and the action rarely stops! Enemies get stronger as you progress through the story, making it often a hectic battle to reign supreme.

When I was playing this very cheap game, I felt happy, a 5 Euro game that just kept me solving puzzles and slashing away at hordes of enemies, basically it even kept me from playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, that came out but aside from the mandatory battle with some online friends, I am still to play it properly, Kamiko is the reason and I think everyone should try it out as well!

So why do I love this game so much? It has that old sense of playing a classic style RPG but more like mixed in together with a bucket full of action, kinda like the Minish cap of the Zelda series, where you are facing similar graphics and fun at slashing the bad guys. But it is not just that aspect of the Minish cap when you are looking for a key to open a lock, again, that feeling of playing an RPG from a time long ago… I loved it.

At first, when you start the game, you are given almost no information and immediately thrown into the action. After picking 1 of 3 heroines to be the Kamiko, you commence the adventure. The first part, you find yourself on an island, without any real clue of what to do, but it becomes clear pretty quickly. Finding keys, savepoints, orbs, … You can not miss it.

In the initial stages, the enemies are quite easy, killed with 1 or 2 slashes mostly, but like I mentioned before, that changes quite quickly, but I will not spoil too much, I want you to enjoy this game yourself.

In conclusion, this game brings an amazing bang for the buck! It got some serious buzz when it came out in Japan originally, because of the English support. I had considered to buy it from the Japanese eShop, but both Graceful Explosion Machine and Wonder Boy kept me occupied until I saw the announcement that it was coming to the European eShop, so I decided to wait it out.

Kamiko has been a delight to play so far, many small indie games don’t catch my attention like this, but this one just caught me off guard. I hope my review convinced our readers to pick up this little gem for themselves and hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as I did.

My rating is 90% for Kamiko. I am not giving it a full 100 because the game is sadly only 4 levels, I hope they ever make more.

Score 4.5 out of 5:
