Top Ten: Worst line deliveries in video games

Guys, Voice acting is hard. You not only need to deliver lines with confidence but without a good director to tell you the how’s and what’s things might fall apart. Games have some notoriously badly delivered lines. I took the time to go trough some of my favorite awkwardly delivered lines in video games and got ten of them here for you to enjoy. Want to hear the worst line delivery the industry has to offer? well, look no further. Here is my list of the worst delivered lines in video games. So with that said prepare to laugh your ass off.

#10. Tidus’ laugh(Final Fantasy X).

Now I haven’t played Final Fantasy 10 but this scene everyone knows. Now there are some arguments on whether the bad laughing is on purpose in the context of the scene but I don’t know that context and even with that context, the laugh is funny on its own. I love the shot of Wakka, Lulu and Auron just standing there with Tudus’ laugh played over it. The moment Yuna says to Tidus that he probably shouldn’t do that anymore and Tidus just says nothing for a few seconds and then just continues to laugh is hilarious too. It still cracks me up to this day. The Japanese version is also worth mentioning. Tidus sounds like a crow in the Japanese version.

#9. This is like stealing candy from a baby, which is fine by me.(Shadow The Hedgehog)

The next one goes to the edgiest game ever created until DmC. Shadow The Hedgehog has seen a ludicrous amount of ridicule for trying too hard to appeal to angsty teen edgelords. The game is not only bad but one of the funniest, cringe-inducing games out there. Shadow tries so hard to not care about anything and all of his dialogue is pushed to its maximum edge. It’s trying so hard it’s funny and this is also seen in the dialogue. Aside from the scene where Shadow asks himself where that fourth DAMN Chaos Emerald is there is this one line that cracks me up so hard.
It’s a scene where Shadow finds a chaos emerald and states that “It’s like taking candy from a baby” and then immediately making sure the player knows that Shadow is cool with stealing candy from a baby he states that “is fine by me”. Damn it Shadow, you’re trying too hard man.

#8.They played us like a damn fiddle!(Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes)

Metal Gear has some goofy moments for sure. I had to go trough a lot of material when picking this one. There is the ever so famous “Just like my Japanese animes” from the first Metal Gear Solid game, A DUD!! from MGS2 but the one I picked is the one that got quite some traction when it came out. The line in question is delivered by Miller and comes almost out of nowhere. The way Miller screams FIDDLE reminds me a lot of a later pick. I also love how he clenches his body mid-sentence before yelling the phrase. It makes him look like he’s pouting like a little child.

#7. What am I fighting for!!!!(Megaman X4)

Next up is Megaman. I almost went with the Dr.Light compilation from Megaman 8. The way Dr. Light says Dr.Willy is hilarious(Dr. Wowee) and when he almost says Willy instead of Megaman makes me lose it time and time again. But I instead decided to take the whole what am I fighting for scene. Just about everything is done so badly. Zero is running on his lines for so long and just the way he delivers his lines sound so half-assed. His “What am I fighting for” scream at the end is done so badly. I’ve said it a few times before already but it never fails to make me laugh.

#6. I was supposed to fill your dark soul with liiiiiggghhhhhttt.(Devil May Cry)

This one just like the previous entry is hamming it up so much. Dante always was this cocky, charming and goofy character but seeing him in this scene is rough. This is supposed to be a very serious moment that’s completely ruined by  the delivery of Dante. I mean I’m not going to argue that the line would have worked if it was delivered better but every time I hear it I laugh. The music that follows after the scene just makes it all the better. This is yet another Capcom game. It seems they kind of have a knack for making funny line deliveries. This isn’t the first Capcom game and it isn’t the last.

#5. Die monster. You don’t belong in this world!/What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets.(Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night)

Next one is one of the most quoted lines in video games. A Konami franchise on the original PlayStation that according to many set the standard for the genre(not me though Super Metroid edges it out just by a bit). I’m of course talking about Castlevania Symphony Of The night. The scene in particular is right at the beginning when Richter Belmont confronts Dracula. DIE monster, you don’t belong in this world! is what I’m talking about. This scene is a perfect marriage of wood and ham. While Richter sounds super wooden Dracula hams it up like no other. What is a man?  A miserable little pile of secrets is also a famous quote from the scene. I especially love how Dracula has to make a provocative statement on religion while he’s at it. It’s so on the nose it hurts.

#4.all your base are belong to us.(Zero Wing)

This one while not exactly a line delivery deserves to be on there. This is one of the granddads of memes before it became very unclear what that even means anymore. Zero Wing’s intro is notorious for it’s All your base are belongs to us line. But aside from that the intro cutscenes is filled to the brim with the most nonsensical English I have ever seen. I also like the line “FOR GREAT JUSTICE” and “someone set up us the bomb” To this day I have not seen any gameplay, but that intro I have seen hundreds of times. It’s easily the most quotable and baffling text in a video game ever.

#3.PIPOOOOOOO(Overblood)

So I know nothing of the game Overblood. It’s an original Playstation game and I think it’s a horror game.  That’s it. So the scene in particular has been mentioned when awkward cutscenes are being discussed. It’s a scene where the main character gets attacked by what looks like a zombie that’s having a seizure before hitting the main character with some really bad animations. After this awkward ordeal, the robot called Pipo(which is a great name in itself) fights the monster and gets fatally wounded in the process. What follows is the most melodramatic NNNNOOOOOOO scene I have ever seen.

#2.Everything Barry Burton says.(Resident Evil)

Is this cheating? Pretty much everyone who plays games will know this pick. When the original Resident Evil came out it was praised for it’s gameplay and graphics but the one thing people really know about the game is it’s hilariously bad voice-acting. One of the characters that got the most play is Barry Burton. Lines like “I hope this is not Chriss’ blood” and “It might be handy if YOU, the master of unlocking take it with you”. Off course there is his most famous line in the game.  The vid you see here is a compilation of every character but most of it is just Barry.

#1. Jax ending/Whereisallthecaaaakkeeee.(Mortal Kombat 4)

Now this one always leaves me grasping for air. The ending for Jax in Mortal Kombat 4 is nothing short of a true masterpiece. The twists and turns just keep coming every second. Mortal Kombat 4 was a step in the wrong direction according to most but these endings sure are some of the bests in any fighting game ever. The ending for Scorpion is also a noteworthy mention. In the ending for Jax we see the full story that went on between the endings for Sonya and Jarek. First Jarek gets confronted by Sonya attaacks her and falls of the cliff. But then it turns out he was still alive and kills Sonya before running into Jax and whooph… It’s a wild ride this one.

And those are my picks. I had to leave a lot of choices out so maybe there is potential to do another one of these lists. If you have another pick just let us know in the comments. I will see you back here next month with a new list.
