The First video game ever was pong. A very basic game where the players try to get a ball on the side of the opponent. If you mix this with a fighting game and add some craziness, you get the wacky cocktail: Lethal League.
Lethal League is a pretty basic game, you choose a fighter from the limited roster of 5 fighters and try to finish your opponent. The only way you can hit your opponent is by smashing a ball to his body. It feels and plays like pong due to the basic controls; there only is basic movement, a jump, hitting the ball and a special attack that makes the ball go super fast.
The game is easy to pick up but hard to master, the basic mechanics are pretty straightforward but once you master the basic the game get a whole lot faster. The first few games I only hit the ball if it was safe to hit but after a few games, I was able to pull out some amazing combos and Lethal League started to feel more and more like a fighting game.
All thought there are not many fighters to choose from, they all feel and play very different. Some of the characters have good range but are very slow, some can double jump and others have one super jump. What’s really unique for every character is his or her special move. The special move can be used when you have made a long enough rally. This move is very strong and unpredictable so it is a good tool the surprise your enemy to score some free damage.
The game modes in Lethal League are pretty basic: there is a training mode where you can improve your skills against 1-3 bots. If you want to play on your own, this is your only option. A story in Lethal league is not necessary but I would have liked to see some game mode where you play against an AI ladder or something.
To be fair Lethal League is a fighting game, and the best way to play a fighting game is against real people. The online features were basic but worked fine and I experienced practically no lag. The matchmaking was quick and it felt like I played against players with the same skill level as me.
Conclusion:
Lethal League is an amazing and super fun multiplayer game. It is easy to pick up and hard to master but always a fun experience. After a while, it could get a bit monotone but I always had an amazing time playing Lethal League with my friends and trying to see who can hit the ball the hardest in each other’ faces. So if you are looking to play a fun casual game with your friends, Lethal League is the game for you.
