Review: Rhythm Heaven MegaMix

Rhythm games are a very specific genre, some people love them and some people hate playing them but when you think of Rhythm games, Rhythm Heaven spontaneously comes to mind.

I played rhythm games before but on my phone, Rhythm Heaven MegaMix was the first real rhythm game on a console that I played. So I did not have high expectations. When I played rhythm games on my phone I always ended up frustrated and stopped playing the game. This was not the case with Rhythm Heaven MegaMix. The mini games are not so easy but still doable and every mini game felt fresh in its way.

Adding a story to a rhythm game is not easy, but Rhythm Heaven MegaMix was able to mix the numerous mini-games into a crazy but fun story. When you begin the game you meet Tibby a cute creature that fell from the sky who begs for your help to return him to his homeland “Heavenland”. In order to return to Heavenland, Tibby has to go to the highest point in the area to climb back inside. On your journey, you will meet a variety of super crazy creatures and to get passed them you have to play and get a good score in  4 different rhythm mini-games.

The rhythm games are super crazy and super diverse. Most mini-games are very straightforward and simple but definitely not easy.  It is very important that you listen to the rhythm of the beat in order to score points. The visuals you see while playing are just a small reference but music is essential to get a decent high score. Every game is about hitting the beat, keeping a rhythm or repeating it but they all feel and play very differently. The settings where the mini-games take place are very different from each other but they all look amazing and are very funny.

You pull hairs out of an onion and the next mini-game you try to catch falling fruit. Rhythym Heaven Megamix is super crazy and that is what makes this game so amazing and fun to play. Every mini-game feels different and keeps you hooked. In the beginning of the game the mini-games are rather easy but while the game progresses it gets harder and harder. Lucky for us every time you play a mini-game for the first time you get a quick tutorial and receive the chance to practice the game. The mini-games are hard but in my eyes just hard enough so you don’t end up frustrated. If you do end up stuck on a level the game will give you a helping hand to get passed that one super annoying part.

The game has a very cool but crazy looking art style that is very typical for Rhythm Heaven. Every mini-game has its own style of art and funky characters that help the game look fresh every time you play it. Just seeing all these cool creatures really makes you exited and happy to play this game.

Conclusion:

I really liked playing this game, it is very different from the games that I usually play but I from the moment I started playing I was hooked. Playing through the story was very fun and after completing it, I still replayed my favorite mini-games in the Rhythm museum. Rhythm Heaven Megamix is like every Rhythm Heaven game, but that definitely is a good thing. Rhythym Heaven Megamix is a super crazy awesome rhythm adventure.
