Review: God Eater Resurrection (PS4 & PS Vita)

A few weeks ago we did a review of God Eater 2, this is the sequel to one of the best games on the PSP: God Eater Burst. In celebration of the sequel finally coming to Europe, they remade this classic game: God Eater Resurrection.

God Eater  takes place on earth which has become barren. The story begins twenty years after a cataclysmic event spawning monsters devouring everything as we know.  You play as a new type of hunter whose abilities have been enhanced in order to help deal with the threatening new residents.

The God Eater series kind of reminds me of the Monster Hunter series; the player equips himself with equipment and large weapons to go out and slay large monsters in order to gather material to craft even better weapons and gear. Where God Eater differs itself from MH  is instead of having only one weapon to fight monsters with at any given time the player has a weapon called a God Arc which is actually a shape-shifting weapon that can be switched between melee mode and ranged-mode with the push of a button.

An other major difference in this game is that the God Arc is something like a living creature that can be used to devour the corpses of dead monsters or take a bite out of a living one. The player must do this in order to harvest materials from dead monsters or if they’re still living to get certain power-ups.

Overall the similarities with Monster Hunter are there but I don’t think it’s a big problem. People who never played Monster Hunter will play a great game and the people who know and love Monster Hunter will definitely like this game and be happy that there are some competitors in the “beast hunting” genre.

In God Eater Resurrection you play as yourself, this means you can make your own character and give him/her the stat boost armor and clothes you like. The possibilities are endless and it gives you the feel of a deep RPG. The character development of the side characters are amazing and result in a very cool and interesting story for this game.

God Eater Resurrection is actually an HD remake of God Eater Burst ; a PSP title that made its way westward back in March of 2011 and while it is noticeable that the game is just an HD re-release it contains a graphical style that’s nearly flawless and blends beautifully with the amazing backgrounds. Although the land is barren and not filled with teeming life, the game still looks good and crisp in its desolateness.

Conclusion:

God Eater Ressurection is a very cool and visually interesting game.  It takes some time to get into the story and to get used to the RPG mechanics but once you are comfortable with the game, it is hard to stop playing it. The missions can get repetitive after a while but the story makes up for it and keeps you hooked. Definitely a must play for the Monster Hunter fans as well.
