Gamescom 2016:Lego Dimensions [Hands-on]

Traveler’s Tale’s Lego Dimensions game has been out for some time now and is still getting new characters, levels modes and much more. I was invited by Warner Bros. to check out all the new stuff that’s going on with Lego Dimensions. I got to see new figures, levels, and a really cool new mode.

When I started playing I was dropped in a game that was  basically finished say for a few things. The level was based on the new Ghostbusters movie. This specific story mode goes through the movie’s plot. It’s still got the awful audio that’s cut straight out of the movie and its humor is still child-friendly and fairly . Now because this is Lego Dimensions I can basically do whatever I want. So I set out to make my own team of all-star characters hunting a specter in the mansion. My team consisted of Gremlin’s Stripe, The A-team’s Mr.T, Sonic the Hedgehog and many more. It was pretty cool to see Sonic, Voldemort and Batman all running around and basically do nothing. You can have up to eight characters so things can get pretty crowded but it’s never a real problem. I think enemies weren’t ready yet because there was a lot of boring running around and it was never really super fun. It’s not that it was bad but it could have used some enemies.

After finishing the rather boring level the people at the booth asked me if I wanted to try out the new multiplayer mode. Of course, I obliged. This new mode pits you against three of your friends and lets you fight them. For the first time you can fight your friends in a Lego game. I played a match of capture the flag as Stripe against Sonic, Finn and Mr.T. When the match starts you free fall onto the field and land on your corner of the map. You have to capture the other player’s flags. You can do your Lego punch or special ability that’s exclusive to the character you play. But there are also floating orbs on the map with items that help you. These can be things like reversing controls or becoming invisible. Once your life is depleted you will respawn in the free fall mode. You can also change characters on the spot. I was playing with a member of the WB crew and had some mild moments of fun not unlike games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. It was when I was watching four people play after my playtime that I realized that the game can come pretty close to having that yelling and screaming kind of fun. Another mode I played tasked me to complete certain objectives. It was pretty fun until the missions started to repeat themselves. By far the biggest problem was that everyone had different objectives so there was no reason to fight each other. With a little bit more effort and polish I could really see myself sitting down with a couple of friends and having a blast playing until midnight just like Mario Kart or Smash Brothers.
