Comic Workshop 2 is a new app that can be downloaded in the Nintendo 3DS eShop starting today. It isn’t really a game but it’s a very powerful tool to start drawing some kick-ass manga. Unlike Art Academy, this ‘game’ gives you a lot of freedom to create the way you want.
Start your own manga
This is the sequel to the original Comic Workshop App and basically allows you to do the same with more tools. The ‘goal’ is to draw professional looking manga pages. The game offers a lot of different layout and pages so you can always find the page and panels you’re looking for. In case you do miss an extra panel, you can simply draw one to complete te page.
The pages offer a Storyboard and finishing page so your imagination can really go nuts in this app. There’s no limit to what you can create, thanks to the fluent pages and ability to change the lay-out of the panels at any time you want.
A lot of tools to create the page of your dreams
A comic app wouldn’t be of much use if you hadn’t got a lot of tools to work with. Well we can say that it does offer a lot of tools to create your comic. From colors to pencils, everything you need is there, even some cool classic manga effects are in. Of course it isn’t like a professional PC program but it’s by far the best semi-professional drawing app on the market.
It isn’t a game
We would also like to stress out that Comic Workshop 2 isn’t a game. Unlike Art Academy there aren’t really paths to follow or drawings to draw, it’s more a tool to create instead of a game. But it’s a very powerful tool if you ask us! For those who are looking for another game to draw, this isn’t the best option. If you’re looking for a decent drawing tool, this is the one you need.
Feels right at home on the Nintendo 3DS
The great thing about Comic Workshop 2 is how it manages to use the 3DS in the best way possible. The touchscreen is of course used to draw while the upper screen shows information of the tools. Those tools can be pulled towards the touchscreen at any time to allow an easy and fluent interaction. The upper screen also shows your full page while you can work up close in details on the touchscreen. It’s really great to see how the developers managed to combine the two screens and made it feel like expanded screens instead of separated ones.
| The good: | The bad: |
| + Great tutorials | – A lot of things to learn |

Comic Workshop 2 is without a doubt a very powerful tool for those who want to create their own manga. It feels right at home on the 3DS and offers a great toolbox filled with useful tools. If you’re looking for a better tool to start drawing on your portable, look no further, this is the one you need!
