NEWS: Valve working on Steam Box?

It looks like Valve is working on a new home console called the ‘Steam Box’.

Although these are just rumors, various sources stated an announcement will be made before June this year.

Valve has become famous thanks to games like Half-Life and Counter-Strike and of course thanks to their Steam service. But that’s not all, it looks like Valve is working very hard on new hardware as well.

The Steam Box is said to be a device you’ll have to hook up with your television, just like regular home consoles. The console would then play games you can buy from Steam and even other services like EA’s Origin. You would be able to play those games using your keyboard and mouse or even with a new designed controller.

The controller would consist out of various parts you can switch depending on the game you’d like to play. Valve already filled a patent in for such a device last year:

Because Valve would rather not work on hardware themselves, it’s thought a third party is involved with te development. The Steam Box would run on a Core i7-processor, 8 gigabyte RAM memory and a graphic processor from Nvidia. Even the Alienware X51 is said to be developed with the Steam Box already in mind.

The Steam Box would of course be big competition for the console market but Valve would rather aim to compete with services like Apple TV and Google Android.

The Steam Box could be revealed next week during the GDC or later this year at E3…. Or not at all.

Only time will tell.
