Sony Computer Entertainment’s most recent financial records show that the company has had a loss of over one billion dollars in the last quarter.
Next to the disappointing sales of LCD-televisions, the PlayStation-division was marked as an important part of the loss.
Even though the sales of the PlayStation 3 had gone up by 200.000, compared to the same period the year before, the increased costs for marketing and the reduction in price created a lower turnover. Next to that, the weakened Yen and the floodings in Thailand were given as a cause for the enormous loss.
The PS3 was sold over 6.5 million times over the last quarter. The PSP-sales went down compared to the same period in 2010 and made it to 2.4 million sales, compared to the 3.2 million of last year. The PS2 was sold just over 1.2 million times. Last year, that was 2.1 million. When talking about software, the PS3 was the only one that had increased sales in games. There were 9.4 million more games sold than last year, which is good for 66.2 million copies.
