Special: Graphic Novel: Assassin’s Creed vol. 2: Aquilus

Graphic Novel: Assassin’s Creed vol. 2: Aquilus

Ezio’s and Altaïr’s story are well known in the Assassin’s Creed universe. But those are not the only two assassins in history. Thanks to the second volume of the graphic novel, we learn to know a new ancestor of Desmond. It’s time to introduce Aquilus and his story.

Aquilus was mentioned in the first graphic novel, as you might recall. Back then, I said it was a shame the creators didn’t give more details about this mysterious ancestor. In volume two this point of critic is solved by telling the whole story about the unknown assassin. It’s a story full of betrayal and blood caused by the quest to receive a rare and unique artifact. The role of this artifact will probably be mentioned in volume three.

Besides the story of Aquilus, we’ll also learn a lot more about Desmond then we did back in the Assassin’s Creed games. The story in the novel is far more personal. Desmond will reveal important pieces from his youth and will admit his romantic feelings for certain other characters.

All in all Desmond had a lot more character in the graphic novel than in the game. That’s probably because the story is very well written and the dialog and images match the feelings you’ll get as reader. The images are very clear and are, just like in volume one, drawn very realistically. It’s a different style and art choice but it’s a style that matches perfectly with the Assassin’s Creed universe.

This second volume also feels more complete. It looks like the writers did their best to create a new and unique story that would fit perfectly in the timeline of the games. They definitely succeeded in their purpose, this volume is a must for fans of the games.

We can conclude that this volume gives you so much more than the previous chapter. This time the story isn’t told too fast. Gamers and non-gamers will have no trouble reading it For gamers however, the story will make more sense. The graphic novel gives you a completely new story and insights on Desmond’s history and therefore is very fun to read. And remember: although eagles don’t have to fear vultures, it’s wise to mistrust them.
