Welcome to the exciting world of the Kukoos, a new upcoming 3D platformer that I got to see in action during Gamescom 2022! Ready for some classic 3D platforming action? Let’s jump in.
You can’t tame the pets
Kukoos – Lost Pets is set on a gorgeous island that is home to the special Kukoo tree. After an experiment in which the Kukoos attempt to make their pets more obedient goes haywire, it is up to the Kukoos to find their newly aggressive and unruly pets and regain control, restoring harmony to the once peaceful Kukoo tree.
Travel through secret worlds within the massive Kukoo tree to find your friends and end the pet rebellion! This charming 3D platformer takes you across the vast and colorful Kukoo universe, where you’ll take charge of an array of pets and use their individual abilities to battle against unique bosses, find hidden collectibles, and solve ancient puzzles. Journey solo or team up with up to three friends to enjoy a four-player adventure, unlike anything you’ve seen before!
Classic 3D platforming with a twist
In this game, you’ll be able to play as twelve different Kukoos all with their own unique abilities to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. During my preview, I got to see a couple of the pets in action and I must say, I’m very impressed by how their abilities alter the gameplay. The cute little monkey is able to create platforms out of nowhere while another pet is able to hover and fly. Getting to know the unique abilities of the characters offers a tremendous amount of fun and adds a lot of variation to the game. It’s fun to play on your own but it’s even better in co-op!
Inviting your friends along for the journey is one of the game’s main mechanics. It’s playable with up to 4 players in co-op and it’s here where the true fun kicks in. The host of the multiplayer session takes the lead so the others better pick up the pace if they want to survive! During the presentation, I got to see this in action and loved the chaotic fun this will offer in co-op. The game also comes with some interesting mechanics such as switching to a ghost form, which will enable you to travel through certain objects and more. In this special view, new platforms are also popping up out of nowhere, giving the player access to an entirely new dimension. Messing around with this ghost vision and the normal world looked like tons of fun and I’m pretty sure the game will have more of those surprises in the final product. Like many other games in the genre, it’s filled with hidden secrets, really adding a lot to the replayability.
Defeat the boss
Aside from the crazy platforming action, the game will also feature some dangerous bosses to defeat. The bosses reminded me a lot of the ones found in the classic 3D Super Mario game, which is high praise to give. Like in those Super Mario games you’ll need to find the pattern of attacks and come up with a counter-strategy to defeat the boss. During my presentation, I saw this in action against a giant octopus and it looked like a lot of fun, especially in co-op mode where you could help each other out by combining your powers. It also helps a lot that the game looks incredibly cute. A visual style that will also offer fun animated cutscenes to make the story as immersive and fun as possible.
Early conclusion:
Kukoos – Lost Pets is shaping up to become a fun 3D platformer especially when you play it in co-op. The cute graphics and interesting abilities of the playable character make it stand out from other 3D platformers, giving you something new to discover in every level.
