Welcome to our review of R-Type Final 2, a side-scrolling shooter that comes from a strong pedigree of games but fails miserably on more than one account to entertain.
In June 2019, we kicked off the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to bring the latest R-Type title into the world. With all your support we gained through the campaigns, “R-Type Final 2” is out now. Many heartfelt thanks to everyone for supporting us.
The Best R-Type We Can Make Now! We try to go back to the starting point without doing anything merely attention-getting and stick to pursuing playability and exhilaration. Wave Cannon attacks by trans-dimensional fighters equipped with firepower equivalent to that of a battleship. This game is thoroughly focused on expressions of how enemies are destroyed. The feeling of exhilaration in the destructions is thoroughly pursued.
The Stage Dominated by Decaying Organism. As new enemies are generated from the carcasses of the enemies, the more the player plays the game, the stronger enemies he or she gets. Not only the player’s fighter but also the stages will evolve. That’s R-Type Final 2. Moreover, new stages are planned to be added after the release of the game.
A player’s fighter is equipped with weapons such as “Wave Cannon” to shoot down durable enemies with a single shot, “Force” that can be remotely controlled and mounted in front of or behind the ship. Also, new types of player fighters will be developed as you progress through the game. One of the fun parts of the game is finding aircraft that are effective in clearing the stages that stand in your way and finding the type of aircraft you like.
R-Type Final 2 is a very frustrating game that tries to cling on to the past and bring us a side-scrolling game when the industry goes all 3D, they went full 2D side-scrolling. Nothing wrong with that, I will always say that a good game is always going to be a good game, but R-Type Final 2 is mostly flawed by its mechanics and its weird design choices.
For starters, when you start a game, you got this animation that is nice but you will not care enough to watch it every single time, sadly it takes many attempts to skip it, which is more of a chore in the end, rather than a simple skip button.
Then you finally get to flying and while this is no bullet hell or heaven game, the fact you got homing enemies and enemies that basically shoot straight at you, makes it so harder to enjoy this game, even at normal difficulty, it is a pain to play. I had one point in the first level that took me around 10 tries to pass, while in normal mode, not even anything remotely “hard”.
I also dislike the fact that I went down twice without even seeing what hit me. not because of the amount of stuff happening on screen, just nothing was close to me and that stupid kill animation came up. Well, I say animation, but the fighter does not really explode, there is just the indication you are about to go down and that is it.
Not once during my gameplay did I have the feeling this game was fun or even entertaining. I was playing my switch in handheld mode and had more feelings of wanting to throw it against the wall when I was unable to beat that one specific enemy rather than to keep playing.
In conclusion, it really sucks when you play a game with such nostalgic feelings, I actually owned the original R-Type on my Nintendo and I loved it back then, but this new version, it just bites the dust. Maybe the time for these games is in the past because whatever this was supposed to be, fun was not the word that came to mind when playing it, more irritation and frustration.
