Review: The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon (Nintendo Switch)

The Outer Worlds is one of the more impressive Switch ports and it just got better. After being released on all other major platforms back in 2020, the Peril on Gorgon DLC finally finds its way to the Nintendo Switch as well. Is it time to jump back in The Outer Worlds? Let’s find out!

A quick warning before you start

The Peril on Gorgon DLC is a pretty impressive one, adding new environments and lore to the original release, but, you can’t always play it right after you install it. In order to be able to play Peril of Gorgon, you’ll need to have completed the Radio Free Monarch story quest in the main game, which is roughly around four hours of gameplay. That isn’t the only requirement since your team has to be at least level 20 if you want to make a decent chance in this DLC. If you cleared the story quest but are still under level 20, you won’t make a change and the first monsters of Peril on Gorgon will make your life a living hell, so you better check if you meet these requirements before you launch the DLC. But that’s not all, if you cleared the original game or are at a certain point of no return, there’s no way to start playing this DLC without loading an older file or restarting the game completely. It’s not the best way to introduce a DLC and I’m pretty sure a lot of gamers won’t meet those requirements right away so consider this a warning. If you aren’t far enough in the main game, it’s advised to push forwards a bit more before you get this DLC, but once you do get it, you’re certainly in for a treat.

My colleague Timmy already reviewed this DLC in his original review, which can be found here, so I won’t go into full depth about what this DLC has to offer to the main game. If you want to learn more about the DLC itself, I recommend reading Timmy’s review, as I stand by it and share the same opinion. Instead, let’s focus on the Nintendo Switch version and focus on how well it runs on the hybrid console. For those who played the Outer World on Switch on day one, a lot of things get better now!

The Switch version

Just like the original Outer Worlds release, Peril on Gorgon looks rather stunning on the Nintendo Switch in both television as handheld mode. It’s of course not the best-looking version of the game but it certainly is impressive. What I liked most about it, is the fact that the developers really supported the game and came up with some crucial patches. We all know that the Outer Worlds didn’t run as smoothly as intended and was flooded with bugs. From freezing loading screens to unforgiving frame drops, the first days of The Outer Worlds on Switch weren’t the best ones at all. Now, a couple of months later, the game and its DLC truly run like a charm. Sure, there are some minor frame drops still, but the big issues all got resolved, resulting in a very enjoyable and smooth experience on Switch. It’s a huge leap forward compared with the version I played on day one and it’s so much more fun to play nowadays.  In my original review of the main game, I already pointed out that it suffers from a lot of bugs but really has to potential to shine bright, well that time is now. If you haven’t played this on your Nintendo Switch before, now is the perfect time to jump back in, grab the added DLC to expand your story, and enjoy the gorgeous and fun world of The Outer Worlds.

Conclusion:

The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is another great addition to the Nintendo Switch library and a great entry point for those who have yet to start their Outer Worlds adventure on Switch. The DLC isn’t accessible right from the start so keep that in mind, but once you’re able to unlock and play it, you’re certainly in for a lot of fun. Thanks to all the patches and updates, the game runs a lot smoother than it ever did before and is highly recommended for Switch owners looking for an epic adventure.
