Welcome to our review of Towertale, a boss battle oriented game out now on Nintendo Switch.
Change your fate, and fight for your existence in this narrative driven boss-rush adventure! Now with 4 player co-op!
Towertale is a 2D, story-driven action game that has a heavy focus on boss battles. Fight your way up the elusive Tower and challenge the bosses of each level. Unveil the mystery that lies up in its peak. Play four different stories and unlock multiple endings. Join Lionel, Faindrel, Lord Snicklefritz and “Dark Echo” in their quest to get to the top!
“The Tower” is known to have been created by an ancient being. Legends say that whoever defeats all of the guardians, and get to the top will have the right to be granted the ultimate wish – “The ability to change one’s fate”. In the past 100 years, many have tried and never been heard from ever again. Until one day, four brave souls came forth and challenged their fate.
Towertale is a game where you need to figure out the tell of the boss, use it to your advantage and move on to the next one. From Giants to gigantic slimes and rock creatures, this game excels solely by its fighting mechanic that can be used to beat the boss in front of you. In a way, proper timing is all you need but that is luckily not all.
Your stamina can run out and that makes you need to retreat. That is what makes this game less than plain boring as it adds a challenge to an otherwise plain game. Yes, I said it. I consider this game to be rather plain. Not impressed at all, just that this is a solid boss fighter, but nothing more. Sure, I could go on and on about how the cutscenes look cool, they remind me of those old “Once upon a” cartoons which does stroke the nostalgia sentiment.
Now, let us discuss the hard part. Is this game worth 9 euros of your hard earned money?
Yes but also no.
If you are into boss fight games, I would shell out the cash to buy this game. I can only assume this mix between challenging bosses and that ever empty running stamina bar can be appealing. At the same time however, it is also what would prevent me personally to buy it. Not being a fan of this genre, I can see its appeal, Towertale just does not do it for me.
In conclusion, for the right person, this might be a great purchase. Sadly I did not click with it personally, but I would still recommend looking at some gameplay prior to deciding if this is something for you or not. That lockdown we are living under, it might tempt you to take a leap of faith?
