Gods Remastered is quite a handful to play through. It brings a very old skool feeling to the Nintendo Switch and that comes with all its benefits and downsides. Benefits being it does not come with hard to understand mechanics or the need for an extended tutorial, the gameplay is basic to say the least and let me tell you, I remember a time in gaming where this was the way games were played.
In short, you are able to throw a dagger, which can in turn be upgraded to a better attack. You can pull levers, but the animation is slow and silly. You can jump and that animation is not just slow, it also looks ridiculous compared to modern day standards. Again, one point in the past, this was the standard. So do understand my words right, they did a great job recreating the original feeling of games of an era long gone. Though if you are in the market for a full fledged remake, steer clear of this one.
Gods Remastered is also not the easiest to play, similar to some classics like Megaman 2, it takes true perseverance to finish a game like this. I will admit I failed to keep playing. There are these spikes from the bottom that kept killing me in the second world and at one point I just wanted to give up. I did push through, but I did end up losing my interest in further advancing the game shortly after.
What Gods Remastered does right in the nostalgia region, it does wrong in the modern day region. If you are looking for a modern day platformer, you will be in for a big disappointment, Gods Remastered is in every way a tribute to everything but modern games. The ability to switch to the original game graphics which I had to look up to be certain. I thought it came out on SNES or Sega Mega Drive first, but apparently it was made 1 year prior and got released on DOS, Atari and Amiga instead, way back in 1991.
As an interesting tidbit, this game also released on Blackberry in 2013.
In conclusion, if you want to experience how games played around 1991, Gods Remastered is your best choice right now. A cool game with the option to switch to modern day graphics but alas not modern day mechanics. It did feel slow to me at more than one time, but the nostalgia factor sure made me chuckle a few times!
If I was to rate it based upon nostalgia, I would go for a solid 7, but on modern day mechanics, the rating would be a lot lower, so I went with a 5 score to keep both sides of the equation happy.
