Indie Corner: Monster Dynamite

Let’s try to remember, it’s the winter of 2009, early 2010 (depending on your platform). Angry Birds, a casual puzzle video game developed by a small company from Finland is released. Years later Rovio Entertainment created a lot of spin-offs for Angry Birds and even a .. theme park on Gran Canaria (although I’m still questioning if it’s legitimate..). The game worked since it was released on smartphones and was easily controllable with your finger. But why bring up Angry Birds when you are looking for a review of Monster Dynamite..?

Monstery Birds

In Monster Dynamite the gameplay revolves around players using bombs to launch birds at pigs, blow up monsters, stationed in or around various structures, with the goal of destroying all the pigs, monsters, on the playing field. As players advance through the game, they can use more bombs to tackle the more challenging levels. But the developers added in a character named ‘brainless’, which can’t die for some reason. See what I did there? I just took the script for Angry Birds, scratched a few things, added ‘monsters’ and voila.. we created a new game. I don’t mind when people take ideas from other companies and use it for their games. That’s how the world works, but..give it a spin, something that distances it from the rest. Sadly Monster Dynamite does not.

Brainless? No it’s you who is brainless Monster Dynamite.

Shovel App Ware?

Monster Dynamite is the kind of game you download in the App Store (either platform) on your mobile phone and play while waiting for the train to arrive at the station. Sadly we had the pleasure to play through this piece of art. It’s repetitive, features the same structure as all the other Angry Birds clones out there and does not really get challenging in a good way. The physic mechanics on Monster Dynamite are a little bit off most of the time. You would think when placing a bomb next to a structure, it would collapse. Thus resulting in blasting said monster into the air. No, not in Monster Dynamite, because why would they? Let’s kick it up in the air, and let it land in exactly the same spot! Luckily we can easily reset the game.. or not? No, the controls are clunky and I mostly turned off the music, instead of resetting the level.

Yay for standardized levels!

Monster Dynamite ..?

Graphicwise, there are better games out there with the same concept. The game lagged a few times and does not really ‘shine’.. and yes, they are asking 20 bucks for this. Please, do not buy this for your kids. Let them play some nice LEGO Harry Potter or Kirby Star Allies (which come close to the same price point with recent sales). I would have probably picked this up for 1 Euro, as an easy to play game on the plane or something like that. But Monster Dynamite feels like a very overpriced cash grab, which will result in very sad customers.
