Review: Civilization VI (Nintendo Switch)

Welcome to our review of Civilization VI on Nintendo Switch, build your greatest empire now.

Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier, Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Explore a new land, research technology, conquer your enemies, and go head-to-head with history’s most renowned leaders as you attempt to build the greatest civilization the world has ever known.

And now on Nintendo Switch, the quest to victory in Civilization VI can take place wherever, whenever.

Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes the latest game updates and improvements and four pieces of additional content which adds four new civilizations, leaders, and so much more.

Most of all, Civilization VI is a slow-paced strategy game with a high chance of getting addicted. It all starts with a simple town that you need to build out towards a mega-sized empire. It goes slow and steady and it takes a lot of planning ahead.

For my review, I played the Sparta storyline to its fullest and while there are so many other alternatives, like the Vikings or the Polish storyline, the main quest was my first entry into Civilization VI and while I thought it was slow, I can most definitely see the appeal of this series. Nothing beats building an army and waging war on one side and being lovey dovey with the town on the other side.

As I was completely green behind the ears for my initial 50 turns, I ended up killing my army by attacking a cunning force and I decided I needed to regroup. I started rebuilding my army, but at the same time expanding my town. Slowly but surely, it became a real city.

Envoys were being sent to other cities in order to make peace with them, much like how real history would have been. The realism on Civilization VI is quite high, despite it all being a mere computer game. As I mostly play in handheld, I must admit the graphics were not to my personal liking, even the zoom function did not appeal to me. This game needs to be played on a much bigger screen than the Switch in my humble opinion.

Civilization VI also plays very slowly. Once your city becomes a bustling hub of just about everything, you are doing so much maintenance and looking over everything to make sure you do not miss a thing. Whether it is chasing enemies or getting that temple built, it becomes your own personal mess.

Not saying this is a bad thing, it just did not fully appeal to me. I had fun tinkering around in this game, but not like it changed my look at the genre. It just did not do things for me. The lack of more of a tutorial kind of did this for me. At first, I was left in the dark and it was only until after I read up on things, that I figured out how the game works.

Add clear guidance to this game and it might do a lot more. Maybe even a basic game with some handholding scenario, like how to take out a barbarian tribe or how to expand your town. So many suggestions I think could be helpful to get this game played by many more.

In conclusion, many of my friends love this genre. Some even simply adore it. Sadly it could not grab my attention as much as it did theirs and after a few hours, I decided to give it a second chance and tried another scenario, only to have the same feeling. This is a good game, just not great, its portability like with many other Switch games is possibly the biggest upside though. If you like the game, you can now play it anywhere and that just can not be ignored.
