Welcome to our review of Videokid, a game about delivering videos on your skateboard.
Skate your way to Jessica with just one life but don’t forget to deliver those videos! It’s the 1980s. The Kid needed to earn some cash to take his girlfriend out. So by delivering pirate videotapes to his customers and staying one step in front of the cops, he quickly became… The VideoKid.
Running the gauntlet of his bogusly dangerous delivery route, The VideoKid must survive against all the odds to reach his beloved Jessica. Is today the day he’ll finally reach her in time?
The VideoKid pays homage to the 1980s, and the classic video games of that era. Harking back to a simpler time of pure gameplay, take control of The VideoKid as he hurls videos through the mailboxes, or windows, of his customers to earn cash. Dodge civilians, jump and grind cars and avoid the neighborhood cops to stay alive. But this is no ordinary street… you may also encounter strangely familiar characters from your past.
I saw among others, Doctor Who, the Carebears, Inspector Gadget, the Freggles and so many more. This game plays homage to my youth and is also strangely very similar in gameplay to one of the classics of my youth, Paperboy. But in this one, there is much more going on.
As you skate through the street, you deliver the videos. You make sure you do not hit anyone or anything, seriously, Paddington bear ending your run, is a sour one. The game has a lot of things going on.
Good parts are the nostalgia factor, not being able to jump over everything and the overall feel of the game. Paperboy is a classic in its own right and Videokid is a very good attempt to recreate the game with a twist.
Bad parts, it takes a while to get used to the controls, as simple as they are. Being run over from behind, that keeps being a nuisance. I tend to avoid the row in general, but there are times you just need to go there.
Other things that need to be mentioned, it takes a while to free up upgrades in the beginning. A lot of the runs you will have, will end up netting you only a few cents. Once you go down the sewers though, that is another thing, but enough about them, discover them for yourself!
In conclusion, this game is clearly inspired by Paperboy and it shows. It brings the same feeling which is a feat in itself. Nostalgia will surely hit you while you play. Will it be enough to keep you playing for a long time, I doubt it, for me, this is more a casual in-between game and for 4,99, this is one to consider.
