Gundam is a very famous franchise from Japan, known and loved all over the world. Gunpla are basically Gundam plastic models, the kits to make your own Gundam figure at home. This game is all about them, but it has several issues that need addressing.

First off, the game is a weird mix between a visual novel game and a musou game and they did not blend very well… In between the action, you got cutesy screens and conversations linking the battles together, but it just does not fit the game at all.

I mean seriously, Gunpla are meant for battle and at more than 1 time, did you get the impression that you were about to thrown into a love triangle or so, very confusing too in my humble opinion. It just did not do it for me. Lengthy bits and pieces that did not just gave me a bored impression of just clicking through the conversation and not even bothering to read ’em. Not even forgetting the weird fonts used, very weird.

Once you hit the musou part, obviously the hack and slash start. My first impression here was actually quite good. The graphics looked quite nice and befitting a Gundam game, but reality set in quite quickly. As a musou lover, this game was so under the standard, it hurt my desire to keep playing and I love this genre…

So what is wrong with it, right?

Pretty much everything. The action was incredibly repetitive and not interesting. The mechanics just failed for me too. The first time I had fallen down, it looked like it took way too long before my Gundam got back to its’ feet and it just felt unnatural. Sure, a robot needs time to get back up, just not that long.

The rest of the action was rather awkward too, even after getting a hang of things and a few hours into the game, it keeps feeling weird to play this game. It pretends to be a musou game, but it does not give you that same sensation of fighting your way through hordes of Gunpla, no, it does not.

I actually dislike having to be so negative about a game, I mean really, we finally got a Gundam game again in the west and it is sub-par, to say the least. So many things can be done to improve on this game too…

In my humble opinion, dropping the visual novel style and focussing more on the fighting might help a lot. The entire non-fighting part is just awkward and might even be called annoying by some and I can totally see that too.

The Gundam Breaker series is actually a high-end game series and this one, it feels like milking the cow. While we did not get the three previous games in the west, the Asian version is at least translated into English too, so if you want to play a game representative of the series, that is the one to go to, not this strange attempt to keep the series going.

Another weird thing, Gundam Breaker games are famous for the ability to edit your fighter, while it is no different here, they introduced some weird system where you had to break the parts and then put em in the brackets to keep them. Just so many strange decisions, not even mentioning some of the heavier RPG elements from the series are just missing or taking the backseat.

No, this game, I did not enjoy very much.

In conclusion, I am just going to suggest going online and finding the Gundam Breaker 3 game instead of grabbing this one. The game just felt weird and awkward and not representative of the Gundam brand.

My rating is a mere 20% for effort…
