When the world is in danger, you’re in need of a couple of Superheroes! But what if you could create those Superheroes? If you create them with the help of LEGO, it could just be possible! LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 is the sequel fans have been waiting for. It offers more heroes, more content and more things to create. Here at Gamescom, I had the opportunity to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy episode.
It starts with a bang
Our demo started in the spaceship of the Guardians. Something went horribly wrong since it’s about to crash. Of course, it’s up to the gang to find a way out to safety and save the day once again. If you’ve played any LEGO game before, you know what type of game you can expect here. It still combines puzzles with the different abilities of the characters and leaves room for creating new tools with LEGO block while you’re at it.
Getting to know the abilities of your characters is very crucial if you want to have a successful run, this became clear right from the start. I struggled to open a simple air-vent simply because I missed some kind of tutorial. Of course, in the final product, I’m sure gamers will be guided a little more and will learn the different abilities of the characters without any problems. That being said, it was something I missed in this demo for sure. The actual solution was controlling the Star-Lord so he could throw an anti-gravity grenade on the problem. An easy solution but one I simply couldn’t find during my first minutes in the game. This is also the strength of the LEGO games, the puzzles look easy but since you’re constantly switching between characters, things can get a little more complex after a while. If you need extra help, you can ask for a hint but I’m sure the more hardcore gamers won’t make use of that feature.
Battle giant enemies
Of course, this all feels similar to other LEGO games if you’ve played these before, you’ll feel right at home. The best part of the demo however, was the epic boss fight at the end. The Guardians were challenged to destroy a giant laser-shooting robot that was attacking the city. An interesting battle that reminded me of a child-friendly version of God of War. I had to attack its weak spots to advance and open a new path with every new move a mode. The battle was intense and thanks to slow-motion effects and a lot of explosions, it was an interesting fight for sure.
During the fight, it was again crucial to pick the character with the right set of skills. Drax was the powerhouse of the team, Rocket the genius and Star-Lord the crazy one defeating enemies while listing to a mixtape. The Guardians of the Galaxy vibe was certainly here so kudos to the team! Of course, the game will feature a lot more Superheroes from the Marvel universe so I’m really curious to find out how those stages will look like.
Early conclusion
This demo of LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 offered more of the same but with an extra layer of epicness. The Guardians of the Galaxy are fun in their LEGO forms and the mission itself was interesting enough to keep you motivated. Of course, if you’re hoping for a lot of new gameplay elements, you’ll be dissapointed. That being said, if you’re looking for a fun action game combined with the strong LEGO elements, this one should be on your list for sure!
