Indie Corner: Thumper

Thumper is a visually stunning nightmare of a game!

I have said this before, not a very big fan of rhythm games, but then came Thumper, a game originally released for Virtual Reality, despite being released on a multitude of platforms. I never played it prior to today, but damn, what a game! The game has even a vinyl soundtrack out there!

And Thumper itself?  It is promoted as rhythm violence: classic rhythm-action, blistering speed, and brutal physicality. You are a space beetle. Brave the hellish void and confront your nemesis: a maniacal giant head.

This game is visually stunning even though you can just say it is very abstract in its graphics, I thought it was incredibly special, unlike any other game in the rhythm genre.

So basically, like I said, you are Thumper, a space beetle, on track to perform rhythmic actions in order to survive and beat the enemies! Whether it is to jump over lights or head into bends or even combine them at blazing speeds, you will need your wits about you in the first level alone!

While levels in themselves are very short, they are addictive and fast paced! You will not always get the proper time to take a deep breath, but that adds to the excitement of this highly addictive game, I often found myself putting aside my switch, just to pick it back up 5 minutes later…

This game is very violent in the way that when you make a mistake, Thumper, your space beetle, loses its wings in a rather unusual way. This is a Nintendo platform after all and it is unusually graphic… Not to forget when you lose your life, it is like the most graphical explosion this game could throw at you!

Boss fights are incredibly intense and the reward for beating a boss, let me tell you it is a very satisfying feeling! While you successfully pass through small bits of levels, you get a specific attack that you can basically return and use it to attack the boss, repeat that a few times, each time with new and harder obstacles, you finally come out victorious!

Finally getting that “level finished” screen before you, true love! I love how it shows how well you did in every aspect of the game, getting a few S-ratings myself, I felt quite proud!

In conclusion, this game is well worth the 20 euros it will cost you, but it is not for everyone. For smaller children, I would recommend against it. This game is violent at its core and should be limited to more grown up teens or adults.

The addictive nature of this game gives it a long life in my personal humble opinion and I am personally rating it at 80%
