Hardware Review – Razer Ouroboros Mouse V

The verdict

For the verdict, I will consider 2 things, price and expectations. And I have to say, I am not convinced about this mouse. That is partly due to the mouse and partly due to the software.

First, the mouse itself. The adjusting of this back panel is not always as easy. The button doesn’t always fully releases the back panel and it feels like you need to apply more force than what seems good to move it. I find it more challenging to find the perfect spot with the back plate than anything else. It was either too big or too small; because I applied to much force which results in the back plate going too far. This might seem like a stupid thing to say, but my wife also uses my computer from time to time. She will change the mouse so it fits her smaller hands, leaving it up to me to change it back when I’m using my computer again.

While it is fully customizable, the gap in the middle of the mouse makes it uncomfortable for longer periods. It doesn’t cut into your hand, but it gets annoying after a while. Even the size feels a bit underdone. Sure you can change the length and a bit of the height, but it’s the centre side that is missing body. For a mouse that should be made for your hands, it’s a sad feeling that it feels too small. Perhaps if you could raise the back panel instead of just changing the angle of it, it would have felt better. Or perhaps Razer could add several palm panels, each with a different height. that way we have a mouse that is completely customizable to our hand. But sadly, that is not the case.

As you should have guessed from the review, the way Razer handled charging isn’t my favourite aspect of the Ouroboros. I struggle with the recharging dock and the mouse. It is a bit of handy guesswork to get both the metal tips in the right holes. Those tips aren’t in at the end of the mouse as well which makes finding the correct position isn’t always handy. Often I had one tip connected and the other one wasn’t. What I also don’t like it the location of the sensor being so close the metal holes. I fear that over time, you will scratch the sensor, which might lead to lower sensitivity or ghosting. I have had a mouse with the same recharging method in the past. After a year or 2, that mouse wouldn’t recharge as there was corrosion and wear on the metal. And I fear the Ouroboros will have the same problem with its metal tips.

Now, the software is another point that needs some work. Frankly, for a mouse that is all about the speed, the supporting software is amazingly slow. It just takes to long to start up. I don’t want to wait until I can use my mouse. No, when Windows has started, I want to be able to use my mouse instantly! And this is not the case at the moment. But when it has started, the performance can variant. For example, the overlay is bugged. It doesn’t always trigger when you press the DPI button. So if you happen to press the higher DPI button while in the middle of an FPS MP fight, tough luck! This happened several times for me on the same night.

But when it has started, the performance can also be a bit of a bummer. Beside the Stats tab that doesn’t work, the overlay is bugged. It doesn’t always trigger when you press the DPI button. So if you happen to press the higher DPI button while in the middle of an FPS MP fight, tough luck! This happened several times for me on the same day, when working and when gaming. A much higher DPI without a message? Not something I would have expected from a high-end gaming mouse.

Another bugged feature is the sleep feature. It is a 50/50 chance it will trigger. Some night I was lucky and the mouse went indeed in sleep mode. Other nights the mouse stayed awake for the full night, leaving me with a dead battery.

For a mouse that costs $149,99, €149,99, £129,99, the Ouroboros was a bit of a let down for me. The software is something Razer is capable of fixing with some updates. But the discomfort from the mouse made me decide to send the Ouroboros back.
