NEWS: Activision CEO: “Games aren’t disposable products”

Games are no disposable products, but relationships that you have to maintain. That’s what Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said in an interview with VentureBeat.

The CEO thinks that game developers shouldn’t see games as products, like most entertainment companies do.

“The way you handle a game, is a lot like the way you handle a sport or a hobby which you love. It’s not like a movie. You watch a movie for two hours and you move on. With games, that’s different.”

The fact that this is different with games, Hirshberg explains by refering to the reasons of Activision to do big investments in games like Call of Duty Elige. “The production of that game was caused by the players. They bought every downloadable content that we released.” According to the CEO, the idea of games being more than just products, is just a different way of thinking. It’s something that’s quite visible with developers like Apple.

“I don’t think that someone that buys an Apple-product would say he just bought ‘electronics’. You buy a piece of the company.”
