Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has finally landed on PC, bringing PC gamers one of the most acclaimed games in the franchise. Of course, the game itself isn’t new so in this review, let’s focus on the PC version of this modern classic.
Master race
From the moment you step into the Grasslands, the game’s visual fidelity is evident. The environments are lush, character models are extremely detailed, and the particle effects during combat are nothing short of spectacular. Running the game on a Ryzen 9 gaming laptop, I experienced smooth frame rates and incredible graphics, easily surpassing the ones I saw on my regular PlayStation 5. Thanks to the extra power of the PC, of course depending on your set-up, the game looks at its best, and the framerate really elevated the combat sequences. However, it’s worth noting that some users have reported texture inconsistencies, where low-detail textures occasionally collapse with high-detail ones, creating a buggy visual style but without that,t this PC port is clearly how it’s done.
Diving a bit deeper into the port, you might be scared away by its high requirements, but don’t let this mistake you. The game offers an enormous amount of tweaks and settings to get it running on your hardware as well as possible. Yes, it supports 4K and 120fps, but that doesn’t mean you need to reach those levels all the time. Even with less impressive hardware, I never dipped below 60fps which is already a huge leap forward from the rocky original launch.
Thanks to the graphical options and optional tweaks, you can really make this game your own. Compared to other games, the options are relatively limited, but in the end, it does what it has to d,o and that’s giving you enough freedom to play around with. Just keep in mind that the game hasn’t run that well on SteamDeck yet. Sure, it’s playable, but when I could directly compare the SteamDeck version and my gaming laptop version, the differences were just too huge to ignore, which is perhaps something the SteamDeck players will want to know.
The original game
Since this is a port, you can read the original review of the game here:
As a port, it doesn’t really change the story or formula used in the PlayStation 5 version, but it does things slightly better, thanks to the better performance of the overall game. Even if you own the PS5 copy, it might be worth your while to revisit it on PC.
Final Thoughts
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC is a great example of how you should port a console game to PC. It adds an extra layer of greatness over the already amazing game thanks to the stronger specs. If you’re able to play it on the higher settings, you’re in for a true surprise. This is without a doubt the best way to play this classic and we couldn’t be happier!
