Bethesda has been steadily expanding the radioactive playground of Fallout 76, and come December 3rd, the Wasteland is about to get even deadlier with the Gleaming Depths update. At the heart of this expansion lies the first-ever raid for the game, a challenge tailored for the most hardened vault dwellers. Recently, I had the privilege of previewing this content firsthand at Zenimax’s London offices, guided by none other than Jon Rush, Creative Director, and Bill LaCoste, Production Director. Here’s everything you need to know before strapping on your power armor and diving into the depths of the Savage Divide.
A Nightmare below Savage Divide
Nestled under Striker Row in the Savage Divide, the Gleaming Depths promises a labyrinthine descent into chaos. This cavernous new location juxtaposes stunning bioluminescent landscapes with the grime and industrial decay of a long-abandoned mining site. But don’t let the glow fool you—this isn’t a cozy spelunking expedition.
Players can fast-travel directly to the entrance to join the raid or dive in solo to kick things off. While solo entry is allowed, this experience was designed with teamwork in mind. As Bethesda emphasized, assembling a tactical squad of four high-level (level 200+) players is the key to survival.
The Gleaming Depths is divided into five distinct sections, each escalating in intensity and complexity. Between these, prep areas offer a brief respite, allowing players to tweak their loadout, resupply, or breathe a sigh of relief before facing the next challenge. The mix of combat, puzzle-solving, and environmental hazards ensures that no two sections feel the same. Whether it’s fueling a drill to progress or outmaneuvering deadly ambushes, the raid keeps players on their toes.
Jon Rush and Bill LaCoste described these encounters as “mettle-testing” experiences, and they weren’t kidding. Each fight demands precise coordination, timely use of buffs, and mastery of perks and weaponry to prevail.
Wasteland Nightmares
Right from the start, you’ll face The Guardian, a relentless automaton who acts as an overqualified doorman. Its heavy shielding requires players to coordinate attacks and exploit vulnerabilities. Pay attention to the timed cycle of its attacks—finding the gap is key to lowering its shields and dealing damage before it overheats and unleashes a savage assault.
Later, the Mole Miners, particularly their terrifying leader The Stalker, will have you clenching your teeth. This subterranean savage can one-hit kill you if you’re not careful.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Enclave joins the fray with its Squad Epsilon. These foes use military precision and tactics, forcing players to adapt and work together as a team.
Finally, the Ultracite Terror emerges for the climactic battle to end the raid. This fight blends brute strength with strategic execution, ensuring it will push even the most seasoned players to their limits.
Big risks, big rewards
As expected in the Wasteland, big risks come with big rewards. Completing the Gleaming Depths nets players the usual staples like experience and caps, but that’s just the beginning. The update introduces four-star legendary weapons, offering new ways to customize your build.
Additionally, player titles make their debut with this update. These can be earned by completing quests, with some titles exclusive to harder challenges. Titles are two-part, allowing you to mix and match to fit your Vault Dweller’s persona.
The scientific Forge
The Gleaming Depths is just one part of a larger update launching alongside Season 19: The Scientific Forge. This season introduces a host of themed rewards, including new CAMP decorations, cosmetics, and unique weapon skins. It’s the cherry on top of an already ambitious update, giving players even more reasons to log in and explore the expanded Wasteland.
C.A.M.P. pets
Another exciting addition is the introduction of C.A.M.P. pets. For now, players can choose between a Bombay Cat and a White German Shepherd. However, Bill LaCoste hinted that more pets might join in the future. When I cheekily suggested a baby Deathclaw, Bill laughed, giving me the impression that such a fan-favorite addition might not be off the table entirely.
Final Thoughts
The Gleaming Depths marks a bold step forward for Fallout 76, offering veteran players a high-stakes challenge that demands both skill and cooperation. From its intricate raid mechanics to the atmospheric new location, this update feels like a love letter to fans who’ve been waiting for endgame content worthy of their dedication.
That said, the raid’s steep level requirement and difficulty curve might deter some casual players. For those ready to embrace the radioactive grind, however, this could be one of the most rewarding adventures the Wasteland has seen yet.
As for me? I’m already grinding levels with my character, eager to “test my mettle” in the Gleaming Depths.
