Welcome to our review of One Piece Odyssey, a game that got a rather surprising port to Nintendo Switch.
Considering I already reviewed the game itself, scoring an 8/10 and its review which can be found here:
I would like to make it clear I am not doing this specific review to change the original narrative in my review, I stand by all positive and negative things and still stand behind that 8/10. This review is mostly about the port, its issues (if any) and the experience.
Straight from the start, this game is such a mixed bag of experiences. While things like the battle system do allow for this port to be very realistic, the graphics NOT taking too big of a hit, but in the random running around in the game however, it could be better.
Yes, some parts are blurry, yet nothing very unexpected. Mostly action, again not unexpected. What really is weird though, the more characters are far off, the blurrier they are. Especially when one of those incredibly crisp overlays are there. The difference between both is almost mind-boggling.
Surprisingly, however, the cut scenes are top-notch. Yes, they are “Switch optimized” but nothing really bad or even low quality going on. It is fun to see and at times, almost worrying that after that one point in the game where you are allowed to make em go faster, you kind of lose all the work that went into them.
I know we always parade the portability of the Nintendo Switch in reviews and well, it has to be said this game is no exception. Imagine taking that long overdue trip to Japan and you get to play this on the flight over. Instant classic in so many ways and to be blunt, the game is very playable.
And that Ladies and Gentlemen, is the kicker here. Whether or not a game is playable and yes, it simply is. Games like these are why we should be more demanding towards the makers of these games. While this is not a dig at One Piece Odyssey, but at all the other games where the upgrade lacks in many aspects.
In conclusion, One Piece Odyssey has a few points where its port to the Nintendo Switch could have been done better. The blurry background is a stark contrast compared to the incredibly crisp overlays and those just confirm the one thing we all know. Switch 2 can not come soon enough, but for now, I will gladly take this port.
